It just occurred to me, due to a nostr bug, that it might actually be pretty cool to have social media hide *who authored* the posts on your TL to force a kind of double-blind perspective. You'd know the post or reply is (or probably is) from one of the people you follow, but you wouldn't be so quick to agree (and perhaps might even be more willing to disagree) if you aren't just smashing the heart button as a reflex because you like the guy. It might make discussions more communal and disagreements less personal if you knew that you're still talking to someone you generally like and respect, but you don't know whether it's "that one guy on the internet" or, like, your actual Mom.

(Nostr, due to ramshackle Tor support, often displays notes from people without correctly fetching their profiles for me, so I find myself liking or replying or following people without having any idea as to their nym or avatar)
 Who dis?
 😂
Liking? You means satsless zapping 😮‍💨
Do you zap everytime you "react" to a reply or note?
 #OnlyZaps 4 lyfe nostr:note1ewskedr84p99fwwgs6zlsvtq70nvjvp7x3xz6w7mv454yfq89ursku34lk
Your note reminded me that I don’t even have a like button 😄
 😎🤝😎
Ppl simpimg for the rich n infloooencers is gross
Love this idea! I feel like there’s a whole client (or even client-level setting) that could be built around this concept.
And relays with onion addresses. 🧅
This. This right here is interesting. NOSTR so good bro.
Interesting idea — seems like it should be easy to select that mode as an option at least, experiment with it.
 🔥anti-ad-hominem-client🔥
 good idea

(not saying this because you are Snowden)
Interesting. Maybe even have the ability to time lock the post. Say, post anonymously for 24 hours to allow for neutral discourse, and reveal after a certain time lock.
Good idea. Mystery & then some transparency to clarify the author’s point of view— even though it can be fluid & not static in certain situations. And this nostr bug happened to me recently— I think.
To achieve this technically, perhaps you could take a zero-knowledge proof of the note and conceal the author… 24 hours later, the author could reveal the full note proving it was them.

Proving the note was authored by a non-spam user, without revealing the author, would also be important for relays to avoid getting spammed with these shadow notes.
You can already do that. Post from an anon key, then 24h later link to it from your main account.
I've been hesitant to add NIP-05 to https://onosendai.tech for this exact reason 😁
Yep, I personally like nostr without all the verification, avatars, bios and what not. Just npubs, messages and relays. Your identity is your signature and your ideas rest on their merit, not your name. "You" becomes the things you think and say, and proof that the same entity said them.
an anon mode or an anon feed would be pretty nice, would get to meet a lot of new people, which i’d otherwise might not meet.

reddit has struck a pretty nice balance with that, it’s mostly anon, but as a long time user in a specific subreddit, you start recognising some of the folk there.

curious if there’s a way to apply it here
It used to be like this in the early days when relays had trouble serving user data. We’d just see posts from npubs and had to figure them out ourselves.
wish i could’ve been part of those days 🤔

maybe there will be a client, that’ll be low data mode, clears cache on a daily, and fully anon.
Sounds like a good hackathon idea.
i may end up part of a client development, so let’s see how things turn out 💜

at the end of the, i’m just a curious pleb, that’s all 🙏
 Snow-mode
We used to have to follow ourselves to see replies 😂 the Wild West.
Maybe clients could offer a setting to not fetch profiles
So many people want to try this feature. Even edward.

I think a lot of this boils down to the twitter-style of most apps. But it doesn't have to be that way. There are clients catering more to communities or topic-based follows. Which sort of gets rid of the parasocial aspects, for the most part at least.

Nostrudel is a great client for communities, if you haven't tried.

Nostrudel.ninja
 Interesting.
And here I thought establishing a reputation mattered.. 🫤
I've been an advocate of anonymous social media right from the start. IMO, social media should be a big blank wall onto which anyone may "tag", like graffiti. The promise of social media is the exchange of information and ideas, not aggrandisement nor ad hominem attacks.
Human communication relies on a schema that includes some context on the sender of the information. Am I receiving this information from my mother? from CNN? from a dude on Telegram I kinda know? All of this IS critical data that informs your processing of it. To remove or hide the sender on purpose IMO would be devastating to the actual sense of communication between humans and people would not like it. Additionally, you become much more susceptible to manipulation by spam bots if you lose the metadata of source.
This happens for me as well. Nostr over Tor is not a good experience, but it feels safe.

Cool idea, maybe a fun toggle for a client. How often would we use it though if it was voluntary?

I just added 2 years to your filter.nostr.wine account for you. This should help with that profile loading over tor! Let me know if you notice any improvement.
 i can haz @Snowden zap?
for the culture?

This is very interesting idea. But how would you solve that social status thing where guy with 12000 followers simply gives bigger impression than someone with 200 every time you'll open their bio? Hide it? Some people dig being followed and build around it and I believe we need these idiots here as well. For growth we need to attract bunch of people addicted to their social media status.
We've become used to be identified online. I recently started using simplex chat as anonymous user and really like the idea of being unidentifiable . even if you do not know my legal name in nostr, my nostr name "hypnagog" simply becomes my surrogate identity.

A chat system where posts aren't linked to any type of identifier is a great idea.
 That's a revealing thought...

Looking forward to the day MSM ask "Do we even know who this 'No stir' is?" and they proceed to breakdown all possible reasons they might have against stirring
inb4 someone says it... Yes I'm aware it's pronounced "nos tur" 😏😄
Since Ed Snowden said it, I think it's a great idea! What does jack think?
Oh this is an interesting concept, I like it👌🪄 you might be onto something. 🧐💭
 Interesting thought!
Like on merit, not on person?
 #onlyzaps
 Mom is that you?
Snowden coming up with clever ways to get nostriches to argue with eachother 💜🫂

I can't imagine this post on any other form of social media 😂
 Brilliant 💯💯🔥
Makes sense, this is why anonymity is useful - it forces you to argue the point, not the person.

nostr:nevent1qqsxvkjgpc6zhydj4rxjpl0frev7hmgynruq027mujdgy2hwjypaqfspr9mhxue69uhhqatjv9mxjerp9ehx7um5wghxcctwvspzppx7umn8dedmv7626nsy9nmse0vxsy24mdf4jshuc6s9xwzc5ujqqvzqqqqqqynxl76h
This is idea is perfect as it perhaps unwittingly accommodates familiarity as well. If a person knows you well enough to know your identity as a part of your immediate community, they will have no trouble identifying you on the platform, otherwise you are all acquaintances and should be treated as such. I might have misunderstood the concept, admittedly technology is not my strong suit. If I’m talking out of my rear, someone please let me know!
That would actually help equalize the playing field a lot. If not, network effects skew things a lot.
 how would I use #nostr with #tor?
we we mean client behind tor? relays on tor?

#asknostr
 💯
It is an interesting dynamic when you just see an npub and an isolated expression of an idea or concept.

The idea stands alone.

I like to think that I don't factor in the noter with the note, but I know this is not the case.
My impulse is to like the idea (not just because you wrote it and I respect you, lol). I would hope the identity or at least source materials would be accessible at some point, though. Otherwise I could see propaganda catching wildfire as it kinda short circuits media literacy
Completely agree. Egos interfere. It's exactly what we envisaged in our app where you can interact with people / content based on their credibility in your graph, instead of their public persona.
 free speech is terrorism
Do you not recognise people you interact with a lot from their writing style (and topics)? I haven't tried this but I feel like I would recognise at least some people fairly consistently even if their avatar and name were hidden.
I think this account (no idea who) has a good point and something worth exploring. The hard part would be implantation. Do we give user a choice to opt-in or opt-out, default or configured. 🐶🐾🤔
 Great idea!
 super interesting
I’m going to start using “ramshackle” in more of my bug reports. 😂⚡️
I actually just went through this TOR display issue with a previous post you made. Initially, I saw your note and started to respond. Then, the network caught up, and your profile populated, so I second guessed myself and deleted my response.

My reaction made me scratch my head a bit. But, I think there is some internalized pressure to make some profound thought in response to bigger accounts. Maybe the high level of visibility is intimidating.

This reminds me of a study that has been done in the uk in previous general elections. People are given policies without knowing which party has proposed them. Each time the result has been a majority win for the Greens.
 I like it
 tor is the ramshackle.

i built this https://github.com/indra-labs/indra in the last 12 months. most of the protocol tests and implementation are there.

it uses lightning payments and a slightly customised channel type (zero fee) inside the network and users pay for small sessions of bytes/seconds. the relays provide exit services that they advertise, minimally providing bitcoin and lightning services and whatever a relay operator wants to, at whatever price is practical for them.

it could scale, unlike tor, because it has monetary incentive, and by using keysend/AMP lighting payments, the senders are hidden from the receivers.

i would love to be able to work on getting it built full time but right now i'm so poor i'm doing linux administration and devops work and this afternoon i have a consultation for some trading bot dev work, which hopefully will involve some actual Go programming.
There is a trade off between privacy and value. The reputation building aspect of nostr is one of its virtues.
There's no reason why this could not be one the custom feeds you switch between.
Let's say "Blind Discovery":
https://image.nostr.build/80f4bfccce3d7e1391361c4a1b55b4acf5d2b50f5363541429f7e9fb68465bda.png
DVM's could help with filtering through notes that might interest you, that you didn't see yet (or any other algorithm). Then display all of that blinded.
#customfeeds
 Interesting 🤔
 good idea
It's a great idea, and it could be implemented at the client level (hiding data from pubkeys) without affecting the experience of other users. I like it!

 Thats why I only zap
 Bitcoin fixes this, too.
This reminds me of the ‘love is blind’ experiment from OkCupid a decade ago. On Valentines day they turned off all photos and let people match and find potential partners based on text alone.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jul/29/okcupid-experiment-human-beings-dating#:~:text=The%20first%20experiment%20Rudder%20describes,responded%20to%2044%25%20more%20often.

Users hated it, use of the app went down, but better relationships came out of it. ;-D
was there informed consent during this process?
There’s a show on Netflix called “love is blind” where the couple gets to know each other before seeing each other. I wouldn’t say the results have been amazing, but some people do seem to form deeper connections that way.
how many undisclosed "experiments" went into "getting user engagement" at twitter?
and would that qualify as an ass wart?

if jack patrick dorsey is my husband then he is untouchable
this sounds like a nice change, maybe as an option.
un-groupthink mode
I do this by reading the replies before peeking at their profile pic & then checking it out. It's pissed off a lot of high status people who felt I didn't respond in a second class citizen way like I should.
Why haven't you posted here since Nov? Is this still the real Edward Snowden?
