 @d72d5211 if I self hosted using my in house server I would likely run out of bandwidth on my rural broadband link, esp if what I was hosting got popular. I'd have to at least pay for a fixed ip address, not sure if those are still pricey.
So what I do is run syncthing which does peer to peer over my local wifi, syncing key dirs across my devices. It doesn't help w email etc but it gets me off using GDrive when all I want is sync. Doesn't work when I'm out either but not a real problem. 
 @616c9fe2 yeah, I can understand those complexities. Fwiw, I pay, I think, $5/mo for a static IP for our  One/Vodafone home fibre connection. Most of the 'outside the network' type issues can be addressed with some judicious port forwarding (that's what I do, at least)...
