Are there people who want nostr to be (stay as?) bitcointwitter2 and those who want something else? Or is this an imaginary divide? 🤔
Yeah idk, this is a false schism. Most people here are bitcoiners so it comes up. But for me, it's like I've seen all those memes, you don't have to convince me. So just don't follow those people. It would be nice however to turn off boosts. That is a Twitter feature I miss (disabling retweets).
Yeah probably. Also yeah, I'm not sure there are many people to convince here. I think you can turn off boosts somewhere. I forget. Nostrudel maybe? Coracle just doesn't show them at all (no option to turn off/on)
Maybe amethyst doesn't? Yeah I went to a libertarian meeting once and it was everyone trying to say they dislike the government as if they were trying to convince their wives. It's was like dude, I'm here because yes I agree, now what next. So I haven't been back.
There's nothing normies love more than a circle jerk.
I just prefer they are advertised as such. Nothing worse than stumbling into one unaware 🤣
I want lots of tiny niche communities. Like a bunch of forums with overlapping identities.
I don't think the Bitcoin people care if it stays that way or not, but it's annoying for those of us who don't care about that. It's not a hard factionalism it's just two different types of people who are forced to share the same space.
nostr is not trying to be bitcoin twitter 2.0
That's what I was hoping, I do have my doubts tho 🥲
just early doors😊 Fiatjaf: I’m not creating nostr for bitcoiners Bitcoiners: https://media.tenor.com/pRk6fQ8pZqEAAAAC/hello-hi.gif
There are bitcoiners like people who like cycling and then there are bitcoiners who are Cyclists https://image.nostr.build/62a84bde3325d7a9fbfa64f6cb8ff6374b278b38af1700b637a5d416c6dc4af5.jpg
It’s the fix for Twitter Those of us who have made mistakes Atonement Yes I’m making this personal But I know it’s applicable to others 😊😊🫡
If this turns into BitcoinTwitter2 it's a failure. Thankfully, I think a lot of people already know this.
it's forever b1tc0intw1tt3r2 everyone who want something else just have to live with it or go to bsky
But bluesky is LeftTwitter2010. I wonder if by sheer numbers of new users that is more likely to change tho. They are doing numbers for sure.
If left folks are on BlueSky they’re confused imo. Why simp for yet another corporation? Keep it open protocol and win prizes.
moderation seems to be more of a pressing concern for them. i think they don't seem to mind if the corporation aligns with (most) of their values, maybe?
It’s network effects mostly. I’ve managed to get a couple of people to the Fediverse, that’s been after 5 years not being on Meta or X etc. So much of the pushback is ‘but these people are here’. I find it disappointing, we should be focused on building grass roots imo. I tuned out of politics eventually, I almost got sectioned in 2019 as I was so upset by what I saw in the political machine up close. The corruption is disgusting. I’m not anti markets, I’m very anti the current system and I also think we need to have a society that helps people in different/vulnerable positions. Most people here are blessed they’re in good health. A lot of people don’t have that option and it’s not just because they didn’t eat steak. The world is a complex system but people want simple solutions. That’s not going to happen imo. Do what you can to make the world around you better. So me, I’ll stay on the open internet regardless. It’s a tool for everyone!
There is a need for hardcore nerds to bootstrap things like this. Bitcoin Twitter has a lot of hardcore nerds. That's how I see it anyways. Nerds first, normies later. I've seen it before. Twitter, Digg (👀), Reddit, any Internet property that got popular. It was always started by a bunch of nerds, then the normies come and it sucks thereafter. Hopefully Nostr can break this trend and not turn into a piece of shit 😂
I am just wondering if things have changed somewhat compared to the situation of when twitter, did, Reddit, started. More fragmented, more saturated, less novel, more fatigue(?) Like, are you interested in farcaster? I don't know it's actual credentials, but let's pretend it was fully decentralised (I'm pretty sure it's not). Would you be interested in farcaster? That's the sort of scenario I hope nostr is not in.
I'm an idiot, and this doesn't mean anything. But I get Linux vibes from Nostr, something big that's just beginning. It's too easy to build on. It's too open for new ideas. Things happen too quickly. I'm running a relay from my phone on Tor as of 30 minutes ago. But I'm an idiot. So who knows?
I'm literally the biggest idiot here, that's my M.O. 😡😤 But yeah just my gut feeling... I think nostr does have a this Other, very curious aspect to it. I think you're totally right.
🫂 Idiots unite 😂
Being able to build on nostr is a totally underplayed / lesser known aspect to it, maybe?
P E R M I S S I O N L E S S 🚀
Can you explain what you envision this permissionlesness will be used for? nostr:nevent1qqsqvws9lz920vqkaky6r23kyvutf5xjspks362d3pphuv863r0zwmspremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59upzqnrde83vq9hqdc656n5pw035zjk77up0lm4swflrg0kmtneu7w4fqvzqqqqqqy483m5m
Your perspective is interesting because you didn’t come at this like the majority of the bootstrap cohort. I think I would have dismissed Nostr if not for understanding Bitcoin, the same as I didn’t get into Bitcoin the first times I saw it. Why didn’t you dismiss it early on? Agree this does have an early Reddit feeling but way more cypherpunk. Wasnt into Linux but interesting comparison! nostr:note1zkxdmh4ypg56hhrr7mwpywpa6a8927n0v8xmp979dkmfs4xeg0yqdcqqr4
I came here in February '23, due to nostr:nprofile1qqsgydql3q4ka27d9wnlrmus4tvkrnc8ftc4h8h5fgyln54gl0a7dgspz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43qz9rhwden5te0wfjkccte9ejxzmt4wvhxjmcpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqwqfq9k & Snowden taking about it on the tweety. I already had some knowledge. I have worked in IT. I'm not oblivious to my privacy and the implications of social media & a networked sensor laden device in your pocket. There was never really an alternative though. Nostr seemed like a place for me to be. New, exciting, slightly broken. So I stayed, and noted, and got turned into a bitcoiner 😂
Nostr will always be nerds as long as the process to get setup is not made simpler and mainstream celebrities don’t signup so they can bring their audience
Also as long as there are clients for hard core nerds. I don't think nostr would follow the same enshitification patterns
I think those are two different distributions and there is obviously an overlap. I dont know how big though maybe it is impossible to measure. Im all for all the "othery" and "somethingelsy" possibilities. The permissionlessness is absolutely mindboggling.
I'm having ideas about something elses. Have you? nostr:nevent1qqsqvws9lz920vqkaky6r23kyvutf5xjspks362d3pphuv863r0zwmspremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59upzqnrde83vq9hqdc656n5pw035zjk77up0lm4swflrg0kmtneu7w4fqvzqqqqqqy483m5m
