Why do people eat mutiple times a day? Why do you eat breakfast? Or supper/dinner? Are you hungry? Or is it just your body used to getting its glucose externally? It can relearn to produce it itself. Why do you snack? Are you hungry or are you bored? Or is it glucose again? We can survive without food for as long as a month. How come you can't even last 24 hours? Yes it is external glucose addiction. Which, by the way, can be gotten rid of in just a few days. If you want it.
A lot of it is just habit. Your body becomes used to the hormonal response of eating at certain times. Fasting is a liberating, educational & healthy practice. The ancients knew the benefits of abstaining & self control of biological drives.
I am certain the response is not to the food in general, but specifically to glucose obtainable from carbs in food. External glucose always needs more external glucose. It is mostly that. The rest is simply boredom and search for distraction, no hormons involved. But if you remove the first reason, then when you will be tempted to eat by boredom, you will feel your stomack objecting. Boredom might still win over stomack sometimes, but that is a whole different thing from eating almost all day long thinking it is because of hunger, genes, etc. I am not saying zero carbs diet. I have not tested that enough. But saying little carbs strictly no more often than once a day has worked very well for a very long time for me. With carbs I am very strict to myself with max once a day rule. Not as strict with proteins and fat, but still I never really need to eat more than once.
In all fairness, the three meals a day thing has never sat well with me. I’m a solid two meals a day kinda guy. Mainly cause I’m working on the farm and ain’t nobody got time for three meals. That said.. I love me some food. Love me some beer too. Life’s short. I plan on milking it for what’s it worth and that includes some shit that’ll kill me. Regularly.
Two meals is best for me too. Prefer a full lunch and a light dinner and nothing but water and coffee in the morning.
