This is honestly such a hard question and it shouldn't be. What Lightning wallet do you recommend to brand new non-technical Nostriches that want to experience Zaps?
sats.mobi connected with @ZEUS, like it was for ln. tips, it's a fork, but doesn't work for US user 🥲 It's also an introduction to Zeus itself..
I'll add them to my list. Thanks. RIP.
Yeap, check it's features, it has lso a NVC connection woth Fiat credi cards made for it.. Massimo Musumeci is the main Dev behind it, and Calle endorsed his fork when posted about closong ln tips services
Well alrighty then. If @calle 👁️⚡👁️ gave it the okay then I'll check it out.
#Relai or WalletOfSatoshi. They are simple and just work.
If outside the US, then Wallet of Satoshi or Alby. If in the US, Primal or Alby.
I’d also add Blink for outside the US. I’ve seen more people use Blink than WoS in places like El Salvador and Guatemala.
💜
Blink is a good one that I often overlook because I haven't used it. Out of site, out of mind, I guess. Thanks for the reminder.
Merchants especially seem to like the stablesats feature
Do you see that being used a lot? I was curious how much it's being used. I don't see it being talked about, but that doesn't mean it's not popular in LatAM.
Alby requiring an invite is a bit of a hurdle so I no longer recommend them as often as I used to. I guess I have invites now so I can start back up again, but it's still a bit of a snag in the process.
I’m glad you’re diving into this topic. Literally brought this up yesterday with the team… we need a solution and recos, education for new folks. Not sure the right answer until Will builds his non-custodial in app wallet lol
It's a topic that comes up so often. For example, the people presenting at PubKey next week struggled for weeks trying to figure out an easy solution. We just don't have one, especially in New York where Lightning is the devil.
Did someone mention non-custodial in-app wallet 👀
Yea it does create some friction setting it up because of that, but it’s still the best option out there I think especially because of how well it integrates with nostr apps with NWC, WebLN, Nostr signing extension, and excellent liquidity and uptime so payments almost never fail.
I don’t love the “invite only” process but I simply don’t know of a better option considering what you get for the effort of seeking out an invitation.
Outside the US, no Phoenix? I think Zeus and Blixt have a similar trust model to Phoenix
None of those are good for receiving zaps.
this is a problem though. these are by far my preferred options over custodial stuff
You prefer wallets that don’t work for receiving zaps over wallets that do?
i meant for generic lightning network usage but for zaps the integration just isn't as smooth as the integrated custodial approach like Primal. zap click
Oh sorry I was confused since the original post was referring to good wallets for zaps. I agree there are some good self custodial wallets for regular lightning payments. Still not entirely normie friendly, but easier than running a full node at home. Breez is my favorite.
Breez I tried twice but it seemed almost to simple. lack of sense of what's going on. I guess I'm a bit too technical. Yes sorry for the confusion, I meant to point out of would be great if these "good regular LN wallets" would be better nostrgrated for zaps. I believe NWC should bring that, but I tried (Mutiny, Cashu) and didn't work at all, so I shrugged and went back to primal. all custodial anyway, no big difference between primal and a bunch of unknown rugpull federation risks. zeus worked OK to receive zaps, but not for zapping. I receive zaps in fountain now, works very well, but again... custodial. no great solutions yet, gotta keep building and be patient 🥲
outside of USA: wallet of satoshi inside USA: strike every other wallet is either technical hurdle or doesnt support zaps (e.g. fountain)
It's surprising that Fountain doesn't yet. @merryoscar is this on the roadmap?
yes we're working on this - coming soon
Thank you sir. This will be helpful.
It wasn't always a hard question, Phoenix was great.
It was great for sending Zaps in the US, but not for receiving. That's the hard part.
Alby
Phoenix but only if I provide the first transaction
In a friends and family type situation, that works, but you can't do that to a room of 50 people you're trying to onboard?
Minibits!
Do you really recommend this to newbies? Ecash seems a bit advanced for most.
It provides an easy copy and paste lightning address and can easily be connected to nostr with an npub to pay people you follow. Plus they get the added privacy from the mint by default
You should try @Derek Ross it is a piece of cake!
I have it installed and have used it a few times.
Cool, i´m using it and surprises me ... i have onbording a lot of people recentely and self-custodial with simple UX seens the way... still in test but real nice option so far... easy in trade-offs
Not to mention there is no KYC with Minibits. If we consider that newbies can operate a bank app they can probably navigate Minibits. Once they are comfortable with ecash, then we show them Mutiny!
I haven't fully tested it yet, but I believe https://boardwalkcash.com/wallet is a complete solution
I have a good feeling that this won’t be a feat requiring technical expertise for long. The ancient aliens will show up to turn the sphinx back on soon enough.
WoS.
I think #Blink wallet is not bad to start from.. However #WoS is the smooth solution for many
I have Alby and have had 0 issues. Would recommend!
No Americans allowed
We're allowed if we KYC 😂 (Or run our own nodes.)
Minibits
For sending
Definitely Primal for nostr + lightning. Wallet is KYC but newbies won't care.
being in exactly that place - wallet of satoshi still can't zap though! frustrating as hell. GM 🙃
strike and blink
Actual newbie here. For what it's worth, the only lightning wallet I've ever set up is Wallet of Satoshi. Everything else seemed too troublesome / confusing. I then funded the wallet with a small amount but have not so far found a business where I could use it (I know there are various online options but they don't generally have stuff that I need enough). I may connect it to nostr and try zapping - I'll have to read up on how to do that. What makes it a little difficult to get totally excited about lightning is that I still don't really understand how it works. What I find attractive about bitcoin is the ability to hold currency in a non-custodial wallet. So with lightning, I would also want a non-custodial wallet. But I don't really get how such a wallet (or really any lightning wallet) interacts with the lightning network and the chain. For example, there is supposed to be an opening and later closing of a payment channel, but I'm not really seeing that in, say, Wallet of Satoshi. If I were to buy a cup of coffee, when and with whom is the channel opened, or is it already open? When is the channel closed? When does an on-chain transaction occur? It's all a bit obscure. That's not to say that I won't use lightning, it just dampens the enthusiasm.
WOS is a lightning service provider LSP. They have multiple channels open with well connected nodes. They are letting you use their channels. These channels channels don’t open and close regularly. They have a balance of funds on both sides of the channel and they “top up” and rebalance channels when necessary. Running your own node with Zues wallet will really help you understand how channel opening and closing if works if you want to dig into it.
Thanks, I'm taking a look at the Zeus website, which looks really helpful. Since this allows you to run a lightning node on your phone, I guess it's sort of an all-in-one package with all the software pieces in place that you need to learn by doing.
Just make sure you realize that when using a non-custodial you will have to pay on chain fees to open and close any channel. When using a custodial wallet they handle these fees and take much smaller fees for clearing transactions.
WoS is custodial. They hold your sats in their channels and manage them for you.
Thanks, that's what I figured. I guess it probably works well enough if you just want to use lightning without a lot of insight into what is happening in the background.
There are non-custodial wallets that automate channel management for you like Phoenix. It won't bother you with any questions about channels etc, it just assumes you know nothing about channels and does everything in the background automatically. It will deduct the channel opening fees from your balance. There's also wallets like Zeus that are non-custodial and semi-automatic. Basically, you can choose to use an automated liquidity service provider, or manage the channels yourself. You only need a very basic understanding of channels to use the LSP. However, you'll also have the option of full manual control over channels if you want to.
We've got the ecash users covered Sending: Cashu.me Receiving: npub.cash or minbits.cash
Can they be combined into one, for simplification and ease of use?
Can do both with minibits
Oh yeah absolutely minbits, can do both. I somehow was thinking of NWC.
I like alby, but there are so many good ones out there.
Zeus with alby, then you can easily zap whilst also learning the node in your phone stuff too separately
Wallet of Satoshi.
1) Alby on desktop 2) Connect Alby to Zeus through LNDHub on mobile (Alby docs can guide them on how to do this) This would let them have a consistent balance across both. Primal is excellent yes, but they don't have deep-linking (being able to zap someone on Amethyst with my Primal wallet on mobile) so I won't recommend it.
This is a good point. Primal doesn't advertise itself to the operating system as a wallet.
I went down this path a number of weeks ago. Alby no longer supports LNDHub or lightning for US based customers. Primal seems only option? sad as WoS was great.
I'm not an official custodian, but a person could use https://sovereignnode.io and make a wallet. Add the LNURLp extension and make themselves an alias. LNBits works.
As someone who has tried to setup a lightning wallet without a node yet, I would say Primal, that way they get the nostr social experience and the wallet. It's also pretty simple for new users I think. I am realizing it's limitations and plan to try out others, but it was a good first step for me, not being split between multiple apps.
Alby for desktop and WoS. For those few zap sats custodial shouldn't be an issue.
Will be @OpenSecret once Lightning addresses are introduced and it has a good UX for automatic ecash/lightning swaps. Although at the moment for a non-technical user, @primal seems to be the most intuitive as you don’t have to do any NWC or signing up for separate websites. It just works like magic 🪄⚡️
