 @cassidyclown @:ihavenomouth: @k. its here :hapyday: its awesome for hammering the steel ones. it makes such a cool sound :hypercat:

it arrived rly filthy. i gave it a series of baths with baking soda and soap and stuff and its no longer gross when touching it but still pretty rusty. i wonder if i could get it shiny again with sand paper or something

 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @k. WD-40 and steel wool
 @Powerlinx Kacho @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. i tried some wd-40. i guess i will get a steel scrub and try again after the vinegar soak im doing rn. thx
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth: @k. @Powerlinx Kacho a note with the vinegar - it will make the surface super reactive afterward and if you don't neutralise it or seal it, a fine layer of bright orange rust will form on the surface. I've found just coating the thing in boiled linseed oil works since I cbf figuring out how much baking soda is supposed to go with the vinegar or whatever. The fine layer of rust isn't that big a deal though since it's pretty easy to scrape off manually.
 @cassidyclown @:ihavenomouth:  @k. @Powerlinx Kacho thx for the info, i didn't know
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth: @k. @Powerlinx Kacho it probably won't matter too much if you're going to beast-mode with some sandpaper/steel wool and wd40 after it soaks anyway. Mineral spirits are also nice.
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth: @k. aw hell yeah. You can get it shiny with sand paper and wd40 (I've done a few saw-restores this way) but honestly you will save yourself a lot of time and effort by getting an angle grinder with a flap disc/pad, especially for a massive hunk of metal that doesn't have any fine details you have to care about.
 @cassidyclown @:ihavenomouth: @k. don't have access to an angle grinder sadly. it will probably take ages with the sandpaper but i think id like to try
 @67975218 @cassidyclown @k. don't you have a Dremel?
 @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. yea, i thought about trying the grinding attachments but not sure about it. they're really tiny and not flat. im afraid i will ruin the working surface on the top by making it wonky and uneven
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth: @k. I remember trying one of these little flap disc attachments for drills (for people who are too cheap to buy a dremel) and I ended up finding sandpaper was easier purely because of the difference in surface area. I don't remember being in any danger of putting a dip in the surface however (mind you I was being careful because I had the same fear you did), I actually ended up swapping to one of the harder nobby ones in the kit only to be similarly frustrated.

 @cassidyclown @:ihavenomouth: @k. haven't seen one of those. my kit only has the ones in this pic. looks super easy to mess up the surface with them but maybe im wrong. either way it would still take a very long time because they're so small

 @67975218 @cassidyclown @k. I think railworks steel should be very tough, so you’re unlikely to accidentally ruin the surface
 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @k. ur probably right
 @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. i tried the dremel. the surface underneath is a bit uneven because of the corrosion and i accidentally made a dip on the side where the arrow is pointing. so i stopped and i think i will just get a sandpaper on a block to do it

 @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. update i went to buy some sandpaper and a block and used the roughest one and its very hard work :blobcatdead2: i did around 40 minutes and im starting to see the shiny metal underneath :blobcat: will continue tomorrow

 @67975218 @cassidyclown @k. very nice
 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @k. go 2 sleeb frend :spinbuddynotspinningpet:
 @67975218 @cassidyclown @k. I can't, the oven is on
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @k. Is there a reason you're sanding an anvil?
 @LESS THAN 200 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. just trying to get the rust off. do you think its a bad idea? :apuhmm:
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. it SHOULD be fine. But remember to oil it once it's clean.

My anvil was always rusty af, but I only ever used it for cold forging
 @LESS THAN 200 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. will do :ablobcathappypaws: it arrived super dirty so i thought itd be nice to make it clean since im using it indoors with no heat on it
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @k.
angle grinder would be much easier tbh. at least here low quality ones (they are more than good enough) are quite cheap. there are also softer pads if you want to test the waters to avoid marring it

or you could use an orbital sander ... for sanding something ...

the hardware store should sell various corrosion removers that are much more effective than vinegar

I guess you already got whatever else off of it but for future reference automotive brake cleaner is a good thing to try for metal surfaces. saves a lot of trouble with things that dish soap just doesn't handle very well
 @creator of #fediblock :verified::makemeneko: @:ihavenomouth: @cassidyclown @k. i rly dont wanna get any machine for it they are expensive here and i will never use it again probably ぐ( ̄▽ ̄) im also afraid i wouldnt be able to get the correct angle on some of the areas and would ruin the shape or something. i will keep the brake cleaner in mind next time ty
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @k.

> the hardware store should sell various corrosion removers

try 10% citric acid. that should be something vaguely like 100 g in 1 L of water. probably wear goggles and gloves at that concentration (I'm not actually sure at what concentration it becomes an acute hazard tho)
 @creator of #fediblock :verified::makemeneko: @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @k. @cassidyclown
Yup and one of those. Available in any hardware store. You don't have to worry about grinding into the surface, you would need a lot of force to do so.

 @f65da12f @creator of #fediblock :verified::makemeneko: @:ihavenomouth: @k. @cassidyclown i wil literally get murdered if i get caught buying another power tool :depression: ill ask around if anyone owns one already i can borrow though
 @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @cassidyclown @creator of #fediblock :verified::makemeneko: @k.
*Psst*
The Bosch 18V akku driven ones are great.
>but babe it doesn't have a cord that means it's not a power tool
 @f65da12f @67975218 @:ihavenomouth:  @k. @cassidyclown

> it doesn't have a cord that means it's not a power tool

this is true. real power tools have coords
