The trend to social media kyc fits perfectly with what I would guess is the slowdown or even slow death of social media (just imo). Most people dip in and lurk, the content creators are still posting, they have careers and skin in the game, revenue /supplemental revenue sideshoots to preserve. But if you had to kyc to even just lurk social media, I would *guess* it would be a very quick death of it. The magical spell of social media and scrolling addiction would disappear overnight. Just imo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Which is why I don't see twitter/x rolling out kyc beyond premium features. nostr:nevent1qqs9pj8ghflgwy3uxz22rr0qaq8sgyfcex7n4hn2ssawy55j0mxhd9cppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qgsds3ghsq4yx36hc44wseptl76dymj6mcr3ypfh2qs4dq8439h90xcrqsqqqqqpqyvxp8
Purely anecdotal, but really seen a lot of non-posting as of a few years. The posting frenzy on Instagram ended years ago. People will post to promote an occasional creative project, repost a political infographic, maybe a significant celebration. But it's mostly a smattering of Posters still going
I've seen a lot of users deleting all their pictures or just having minimalist profil on insta and occasionally post stories, but they lurk a lot, every day.
A lingering 'what to do with my hands and phone'. Kyc and a fidget spinner revival will kill social media. That's my prediction:)
What I find baffling is people still falling for the free speech meme on X. I honestly think a lot of people will just blindly follow along. I don’t know anyone irl here nor on the Fediverse. Most people just don’t seem to value their digital capital that much. I do think SM will dissipate, we’ve already seen that with Fedi/BlueSky/Threads but a lot of people seem to want the next big thing. I’ve been trying to convince my other half for years now and she still uses Meta products and has a lot of her research there. Even this morning I told her about how MTV just deleted their archives. Corporations are ephemeral entities, it’s not the place you want your work stored. I have no idea what the future holds but I like the potential here, even if it stays small, I probably prefer that tbh
There was a time when 'the Facebook killer' was unimaginable. It was unimaginable to have an event and not use Facebook events. People used insta ( I appreciate this is a meta product) but people also just returned to emailing about events. Then people just slowly lost interest in FB really. The 'social media killer' could just be disinterest and not another app.
