Oof. That's a really steep price to buy in to the server.

I totally get moving away from telegram, though.

But $100? Yeesh.
You think $100 is expensive for receiving private 1-1 support from technical experts for life...Yeesh. Have you tried hiring a lawyer for an hour?
 No. I can't afford it.

Yes. It is too expensive for me both in terms of fiat and in terms of bifurcation of the user-initiated support from the rest of the support system. This is going to lock out people who want to DIY stuff, and will have very valuable experience to bring to the table, and the community will be poorer for the exclusion of those people.

So, yeah. It's too much. IMO. But, I don't make those decisions. I would never buy one of your servers, anyway, since the hardware is too limiting and I can't do anything else with it. I set up startOS on proxmox on a much more powerful tiny pc that I got used for not much more than one of your servers. I can run anything else on your servers. That's too limited. That being said, you need to generate revenue, so, maybe that's the correct decision. I just think that's a rather ostracizing, un-friendly move that may turn others away from trying your software before considering buying your hardware to run it. 🤷‍♂️

This makes me less likely to continue to use startOS or recommend it to others. But hey, you do you. 👍
There's no charge for running the OS, StartOS is free and open source, anyone can install it they was he.
Yes. I get that. It's just a matter of shutting off avenues of discussion. I don't like that part of it.
Doesn't matter. Lawyers' services are a completely different product and it has no bearing whatsoever on a choice to use start9's product. You've created an incentive for yourself to reduce the quality of your guides, which I'll say are top notch, but I have to doubt they will be going forward. And you could have chosen nostr for support, or anything. There are options.

Just be sure the latest version of startos is freely available before you go out of business. No need to waste your efforts.
 Spoken like a true commie

Do you also yell at miners for not including your txns on the next block for free?

V4V is the right thing to do.
Ironic. You know next to nothing about me, but assume something about my worldview. In my experience, communists make the grandest assumptions. Don't bother replying - you're blocked.
This is a completely different product from StartOS.

StartOS is free software.

Hardware costs money. Humans cost money.

We've been doing support for free for 5 years and are only now making the swtich to paywall because scammers are getting out of control. The ONLY way to prevent scammers is to control the server and charge for access. There is NO other way.
Okay that does make sense. I also want to say,
I've never needed to ask you guys for help because your online guides are so good. Please don't axe the guides...
Guides will ALWAYS be awesome and free. In fact, all new and improved docs are being released alongside v0.3.6
You guys are awesome. People don't have the *right* to another person's labor. You pay people to help, the recipient of that help should rightfully pay. Thank you for the software.
-A DIY Start9 user
Thank you. And TBH the $100 doesn't move the needle much, since we are doing it for free for anyone who has purchased or will purchase a server. It's mostly to keep the scammers out. Pay to play is the only way.
Actually lawyers in third world countries aren't that expensive for some of us but they are for people living there. This price of 100$ is for them astronomical. Think about them for a second not just profits which I totally understand that even you guys need to pay bills. I get that but, you might also start to think about regional-pricing. Seriously!

Because I think there will be quite harsh response from the #diy comunity.

Yes I am late to the party. My #start9 DIY server is not even 1 week old and I'm already disappointed.

Mine has been up for less than a week, also. I'm not particularly disappointed. I am just kinda shocked at the price and reasoning.
There's still the same community support for DIY servers... that's where DIY servers were always supported. The fee is only for those who want official support on top.
That's fine. It's just that I hate logins and accounts and really can't stand logging into things these days. Nostr is ruining the rest of the internet for me. 😅
A Start9 nostr support community would be pretty cool
It would be cool for everything.
One day soon, every Japanese toilet will have nostr integration.
Custom bidet settings per npub? Yes. 100% this.
No nostr nests though, I hope
 That's up to the toiletee.
 Damned censorship resistance
a bidet that increases the temperature according to the price of bitcoin 🧡
 Could.
I think this needs more eyeballs. Granted, I have no clue how to do this in code, but, I think it should go something like this:
1. The toilet would have an NFC reader nearby. Most of us have our phones with us when we go to poop, so...
2. A signing app is opened to initiate an NFC signing event.
3. The system the reader is attached to pulls down a list of settings via relays.
4. The bidet is set to your preferred butt blaster mode.
5. Butt blaster mode is initiated either automatically (per settings) or with another confirmation event. This could be a settings confirmation before initiation.
6. Your butt gets cleaned (and maybe dried, depending on the bidet's abilities) automatically.
7. Smile happily.
8. And since we're in fantasy land... This would be on every toilet in the whole world.

Would need a new kind. Kind22222 which would be your preferred settings that you post to the relays.
Yup $100 USD in different parts of the world have different purchasing power.
But I'm relaxed now since I read the comments. We're good 👍🏽
TBH, surprised it's lifetime, not membership by month or year.
We try to be generous, seriously.
Just a Start9 user here, but the support the provide is top notch. They have helped me and my buddies lots over the past 3 years - great way to support a top notch company IMHO
They work for money. Don’t you?

They already give away the OS for free. $100 is the bare minimum we can do to support what they do
