Imagine a world where we only had appstores for software distribution, where you need permission to ship software to your users. We’re moving toward this and it’s pretty sad.
I'm sure we will find a way to fight it
Agreed.
The EU actually forces Apple to allow 3rd party app stores at least.
State violence is not the answer. Here they did something decent, but more often than not, the pendulum swings the other way. On a principled basis, Apple should be able to do whatever they want and users should vote with their wallets. All Apple consumers are both guilty and have the solution in their hands.
I agree
The alternative is even worse: unelected corporations having a monopoly if not on state violence then on technological, psychological manipulation and control of populations, as we have seen facebook, google and amazon do when EU doesn't step in. Voting with wallets has its limits when the only place left to buy essential things is corporate supermarkets and tech companies. Where are you going to get your computer chips from when only 2 companies sell them ?
Monopolies arise mainly due to State support and friction given to potential competition due to regulatory compliance. Big Tech would definitely not exist without that, at least not at today's scale.
Everything trends to the marginal cost of production, so we’re headed towards all software is free and written by AI.
I picture a future where you go on netflix and describe what kind of film you would like to watch and AI makes it for you in real time. Netflix is already funding AI companies to see if they can write scripts (and frankly I'm not sure that can be worse than most of what Netflix produces now)
Perhaps you should create a progressive web App Store…
the web sucks as a platform to build apps
Not an argument
Well Google chrome is trying its best to make sure we can't make good web apps in case the lose ads. . I feel a decade of devs pushing chrome over firefox because of a few missing features has a lot to answer for. Sometimes less is more.
More than sad. Dystopian AF.
App stores in Linux and other FOSS platforms are pretty free. It'll be easier for those to compete with the advent of RISC V mobile and desktop systems too, and people discussing and showing each other alternatives.
Stop enabling them.
It seems like this is pretty much where we’re at now, with the exception of some nerds
This is my point. Never had these permissioned appstores when i was growing up. Things are regressing, hopefully it’s not going to get worse.
License to operate, as thieving cunts arguing freedom is embarrassing, Big Bro 🪪 https://i.nostrimg.com/367ba7dd45ac261477f8996f1efbd396f423c7b65e4ff4aadbd5162341e21a13/file.jpeg
iOS 17.2 beta code hints that Apple might be gearing up to let users easily install apps from sources other than the App Store on their iOS devices🤘
👀
Uncertain whether that implies anything but franchise rules, with maintained control. 😉
their plans are fiat bro. in the end they will all be MySpace.

Too bad the web is terrible and insecure
They want it all permissioned, and they want us to pay subscriptions to use it.
wait.... what? Aren't we doing the exact opposit of that?
Do not feed the permissioned app stores nostr:note1nm5jctd0r9h6nvu58pnj5zlx7sfjgvzyytj3z8xjh0nau2gsrfgstww4n6
the web sucks and so does apple, these are not mutually exclusive
Every nostr app I have used on desktop web browser is significantly better than either android or ios equivilent app. I also find this is true for new apps eg The Guardian.
