Imagine a world where we only had appstores for software distribution, where you need permission to ship software to your users. We’re moving toward this and it’s pretty sad.
First post I see gets the sats and today this was it
 Thank you sir *tips fedora*
 !!
I'm sure we will find a way to fight it
 Of course
 Agreed.
The saddest part is that people are doing it to themselves. They have power, and options now. But they walk toward the app stores with their mouths hanging open on the way to Walmart
The EU actually forces Apple to allow 3rd party app stores at least.
State violence is not the answer. Here they did something decent, but more often than not, the pendulum swings the other way.
On a principled basis, Apple should be able to do whatever they want and users should vote with their wallets.
All Apple consumers are both guilty and have the solution in their hands.
The alternative is even worse: unelected corporations having a monopoly if not on state violence then on technological, psychological manipulation and control of populations, as we have seen facebook, google and amazon do when EU doesn't step in. Voting with wallets has its limits when the only place left to buy essential things is corporate supermarkets and tech companies. Where are you going to get your computer chips from when only 2 companies sell them ?
Monopolies arise mainly due to State support and friction given to potential competition due to regulatory compliance.
Big Tech would definitely not exist without that, at least not at today's scale.
 Very
Everything trends to the marginal cost of production, so we’re headed towards all software is free and written by AI.
I picture a future where you go on netflix and describe what kind of film you would like to watch and AI makes it for you in real time. Netflix is already funding AI companies to see if they can write scripts (and frankly I'm not sure that can be worse than most of what Netflix produces now)
Yes and your phone doesn’t have apps, you just tell it what you want and it generates an answer or a game real time.
Perhaps you should create a progressive web App Store…
the web sucks as a platform to build apps
That’s annoying. I wish there was a way to avoid the App Store altogether.
 Not an argument
Its not an argument its a fact
Also not an argument. Where it excels is that there is no gatekeeper.

Apple is one of the worst gatekeepers, middleman, skimmer
Well Google chrome is trying its best to make sure we can't make good web apps in case the lose ads. . I feel a decade of devs pushing chrome over firefox because of a few missing features has a lot to answer for. Sometimes less is more.
We? That's literally what apple did it's whole life. I can install whatever the hell I want on my mod Android.
I don't see why people expect different actions from Apple. You can't move the mountain...
 More than sad. Dystopian AF.
Where can we side load Damus?
More news is coming out on iOS side loading. It’s seems EU is pushing hard for it.

But of course, even if EU enforces, this doesn’t mean Apple has to comply on all regions.
App stores in Linux and other FOSS platforms are pretty free. It'll be easier for those to compete with the advent of RISC V mobile and desktop systems too, and people discussing and showing each other alternatives.
 Stop enabling them.
It seems like this is pretty much where we’re at now, with the exception of some nerds
This is my point. Never had these permissioned appstores when i was growing up. Things are regressing, hopefully it’s not going to get worse.
A choice was made despite the obvious cons
License to operate, as thieving cunts arguing freedom is embarrassing, Big Bro

iOS 17.2 beta code hints that Apple might be gearing up to let users easily install apps from sources other than the App Store on their iOS devices🤘
 👀
 👀👀

Does this have to do with the EU?
Digital markets act (DMA) of the EU establishes specific responsibilities for "gatekeepers" to promote fairness and openness in digital markets.
 Huge…
Uncertain whether that implies anything but franchise rules, with maintained control.
😉
Hopefully, this change is just the beginning, and we'll see more flexibility in the future.
I’m pretty sure this is due to antitrust/legal actions against them.

Their hand was forced.

Good news for us, regardless.
Agree it can look dire at times. But I’m confident that over time, the free market & FOSS will win. Plus the EU will force Apple to allow side loaded iOS apps by 2024 😂
 PWAs FTW
Debian has an AppStore and it's not a problem. They manage quality and security just fine. It's the locked monopoly choke point AppStore that's bad.
And we appreciate you fighting the good fight 🙏
their plans are fiat bro. in the end they will all be MySpace.

Too bad the web is terrible and insecure
They want it all permissioned, and they want us to pay subscriptions to use it.
wait.... what? Aren't we doing the exact opposit of that?
Pro-tip: Download an APK from anywhere and just click to install it.
Microsoft, apple, google are responsible with their monopoly practices. Capitalism is simply a transition step to monopolism.
Watching the power structures grapple with FOSSy type stuff is disappointing and disheartening. They're so afraid of not having control.
We'll always find a way around it
the web sucks and so does apple, these are not mutually exclusive
Every nostr app I have used on desktop web browser is significantly better than either android or ios equivilent app. I also find this is true for new apps eg The Guardian.
It very arguably does. I’ve not seen a web app that wouldn’t have been better as a native one.
