 Not math. Real experience.
If you are sending small amounts on lightning they can find cheap routes, but try sending larger amounts and you will feel the pain.
What's the realm of payment size you're doing?

Are these payments for commerce or for managing liquidity?
Say you are sending a friend 1m sats.

Does it matter if it was for commerce or managing liquidity? It’s a cost we are paying.
Yeah maybe, but the payment is instant
Also, doesn’t create a change UTXO which could be small and is more private
Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Lightning offers value, that value will be priced. And we might end up with expensive lightning as well.

That’s where my head is at.
To me it does since when I rebalance etc I'm executing an arbitrage and moving much higher volume than normal for which the pricing matters.
Yeah, and costs a lot to do that.
 Show me some numbers

a million sats is an absolute fortune In the future however
It could be that you're sending from / receiving to relatively isolated nodes. Have you tried setting a maximum fee?
Can you set a maximum fee when paying an invoice. I’ve never tried it before.
Yes - the spec allows this to be set on a percentage or absolute value basis. Some wallets may not have implemented this. Indeed, some even game the routing so they can skim higher transaction fees.
