Ok, Everybody wants Amethyst Purple now. But hold your horses. I want to first try a release-based donation model that goes straight to the devs/designers/translators who helped in that specific release. It's similar to what we do today in my release notes where your zap splits go straight to the devs. The goal of the model is to align the right incentives with the finances: we only get paid when we have something new. If we don't ship, nobody gets anything. That will keep the wheels turning and avoid the usual product stagnation. On top of that, I don't want to make Amethyst a company. At least not yet. Companies are too centralized and complicated for my current taste. I want to see if we can stay as a humble open-source project while collecting the same amounts a company would but through your direct payments/donations to what would have otherwise been employees. Basically, an extreme version of value 4 value. We will see if the idea works. It's still early and we already collect a good amount per month (~$1700/mo combined). So, it should be possible. Fingers crossed.

If you receive yourself, in a thing you control (similar to a bank account), you have to declare as your income and deduct expenses from it. I want to see if we can avoid all of that. On top of that, I don't want the legal liability of having made sale-based promises to users (like the translation item in Purple).

I'm glad you shared your plans. Today with seeing the Purple love, I was seriously considering how I can support Amethyst in a structured, equitable way. I'm not keen on have a free/premium tier subscription structure so I'm happy to see what out of the box implementations you will have. Amethyst all the way 💜

I think it can be a combination of subscriptions, per release donations as well as bounties. Subscriptions can provide private app support and other benefits. Furthermore, a percent of the subscription revenue can go to contributors of each release. For those that are more involved with development, each release recieves donations and tips, that are also distributed to contributors. And for the most involved in production, there can be a market of bounties. Each I think provides an option to contribute value at different levels of involvement.

For another view this is basically what has happened in the craft world. Some of the “bigger names” got the title of influencer & each make money in various ways. All offer subscriptions to support theirselves as well. How to be equitable and fair is the tough part. And goodness, if you do things for free some love you and others say you are keeping others from making money. It’s an odd thing.

I used to say that you can't overcome Google by just copying the same business model that Google uses. You have to create not only a new product but also a new way to collect the revenue. We will see if it works :)

I salute what you are doing and experimenting. I would add, though, that the incentive for constant change (in fact, as much change as possible) may not be the best incentive either. If the product is perfect, stagnation is good.

There is no such thing as a perfect product. Lifetime of an app's codebase is usually 2-3 years. After that, the app either starts feeling outdated or, more frequently than not, another app does the same thing in a more modern way.
