NWC is great but there are no good open NWC solutions to push people to as a default in Damus, that's pretty sad :(
 what is nwc?
 NostrWalletConnect
how does it work? can i connect any ln-wallet?
Yeah, and Alby NWC is going paid 😢
This is not true - the new Alby Hub wallet (Powered by NWC) is 100% free and open source. You can choose to pay for cloud hosting for convenience with some other benefits, but it's completely optional
Yeah, but the rest of it is going paid, nobody is going to set up their own wallet with Alby, they will just switch. Most people can't or don't want to run their own.
It’s true and a difficult problem to solve. People who are not willing to run a node must trust a mint or do KYC with a custodial wallet.

We’re working on an alternative with Alby Hub where you can share liquidity with friends and family, and they get a smooth onboarding with NWC which they can use in Damus or any app that supports NWC. We would love feedback if you’re interested in trying it out!
I thought LNBits had support for NWC, along with Cashu?
Are there any reliable lnbits or cashu nodes that can handle large number of users? I don't want to push users to instances that will just rug damus users in the end. This is a serious decision we have to make. If the solution is just let your friends suggest instances, there is a bootstrap issue.
There are many mints now. You can discover them easily via nostr. Check how nutzap.me does it for example
 Sorry nutsack.me
I tried to use that but I couldn't withdraw anything
 Which mint do you mean
honestly no. there are currently no suitable options for this. but that may be for the best to avoid centralizing
What do you mean by open?
zero friction to creating an account. I was looking to something that "just works". Alby was that but it's not open anymore. Mutiny doesn't fit the "just works" criteria yet.
Open as in third parties or self sovereign?
open as they can create an account with zero friction
 What's an account

I've been helpful, scroll a bit further 😅
Oh yeah, Alby acc is invite only now..

I just use NWC on my own node. 😎
 This is the way.
There is simply a 0-100k sat issue. For no coin new npubs there is really nothing to use except a custodial solution like cashu.

Everyone has a lightning address automatically at npub.cash

A self custody lightning channel is 100k sats from Zeus or Mutiny. All that is needed is the clarity of this 100k sat gap. Beyond that a channel can be opened.

I have been using nostr:nprofile1qqstxwlea9ah3u6kjjszu6a7lrnhqkfh8eptp2z6v0e9558tlkkl2rgpzemhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejz7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcpremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59u4kl3vp with great success since it launched. In the cashu space there has been upfront and honest running of mints. The community has gained a lot of trust and is dedicated to the succes of the project.
Not even asking for a noncustodial wallet, i don’t know of any custodial nwc lightning wallets that I feel comfortable showcasing as a default. Whenever I do they end up closing signups.
I'm not saying custodial is bad here, more just highlighting that there is a 0-100k sat issue that new users face before they can become self custodial to mitigate the potential rug from a mint. Also that there are other wallets/solutions that allow new users to immediately receive and send with not much more than an nsec and pasting in an lnaddress.
The Samourai arrests have had a massive chilling effect.
 Yep 👍
maybe the solution is just "whatever cashu mints random people you follow suggest". I feel like this will just lead to many rugs =/ Maybe we're just too early and will have to wait for a few reliable mints to establish themselves.
I'm not a fan of hobbiest mints when it comes to people's money. Would be seriously irresponsible of us to be pushing users there who don't know about any of this stuff.
Yes, but also make it so that your users don’t hold large balances on any single mint; say when 10k sats is reached in any mint you shuffle things around or guide them to move funds into an established fedimint or Liquid.

The thing is that when the user has no funds they can’t spend fees to improve their setup, but once there are some funds to protect more choices become economical.
That’s a good point, maybe the clients can diversify risk automatically shuffling balances across many different mints. The engineering and design to do this right will be a decent amount of work, but its an interesting approach 🤔
I’ve seen no kyc regulated financial services are viable for small amounts (i.e. less than $1k). Could an institution offer a mint and somehow cap amounts with range proofs?
