it's annoying and also happens on my CalyxOS + Amethyst. It dissapears when you disable "Show currect suggestions".
On graphene there is no setting that I can find. I can turn off spell checker but that doesn't help. I can take away "open supported links" from the keyboard app, but that doesn't help either. As you back up, when it decides to underline a word, if you back up once more, that is when the space before the word disappears.

OK I found it. There are so many menu paths I looked down before I found this one. It goes like this: Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Keyboard > Text correction -> Show correction suggestions OFF
The FUTO keyboard doesn't have this issue for me unless I tag someone and try to keep typing. Then a worse hell returns. I was told a while back I had to use some special keyboards, but I thought that was ridiculous since none of my keyboards have this issue with anything else (including socials before I went Nostr only).
I had this issue on both Primal and Amethyst at one point, but I'm only using Primal with FUTO now. I am typing this line with the stock Graphene keyboard on Primal and it still has the 'smashing' issue that drives me fucking bananas.
