 Let them burn
I ask in the context of improving nostr landing pages. Some non-nostr apps sometimes do things well. Nostr devs should learn from things that work well.
 Indeed, you're right
The existence of “sign up” and “log in” buttons
 > The existence of “sign up” and “log in” buttons

Is this good? Bad? Ugly?

Why, or why not?
It’s bad because you won’t own anything on a site with signup/login.

At sign up, you are just requesting to be recorded in some company's database.

On log in and usage of the service you’ll be asking for permission for everything you do.

Personally, I did not come to nostr because of a landing page. I’m here for the private/public key pair I get to own, and the growing number of stuff I can do with it.

I was tired of not owning my social connections and of worrying about when I’d be penalized next.

Sure, you and I and many on nostr understand this.

For the new to nostr normie login/signup is a standard pattern.
true. i’ve lost the ability to think normal after years of software development, too 😄

but word of mouth will also do it’s thing. even though they don’t understand the protocol it will still become common knowledge that it’s smart to build on private/public keys. at least corporates will get it quick
I agree the ownership of identity part is key.

Scary: “crytographic public private keypairs”
Bit more normie friendly: “own your identity”
somewhere between Gab and Bsky. I like that Gab has a "landing" page before throwing you in their view of the network. I like that bluesky shows you current activity.
What benefit do you receive from the Gab landing page?
from the Gab landing page itself? nothing.

but I like landing pages as a brief overview of the tool I'm using, maybe with a faq.

I think bluesky showing you their "feed" is a nice feature, but is not the first page I want to see when exploring a new network/tool. hence why I think somewhere between the 2 is a good option.
I think the challenge is that these screens are asking people to join a protocol instead of try an app.

None of them are bad per se, but most people are not looking for a protocol they are looking for a tool to solve a problem or entertain themselves.

I think Nostr is very appealing to developers for good reason. What users want is a set of apps where they have one identity but can post different types of content without needing to recreate their social graph over and over. The sell is the set of apps rather than the protocol.
 These all suck
Same as nostr: fuck any forced JavaScript
