Has social media been a net positive or a net negative in your life?
corporate media were definitely net negative ... waaaaay negative
Nostr has been a real life net positive for sure in my life. #BTC #Zap⚡#Nostr #FreeJulianAssange
Not fully sure personally. Never really used it much before. This use-case of Nostr is my first where I’ve truly engaged. However, as someone who grew up without social media, I’d say in general it’s been a net negative for the world due to its centralised / algorithmic evolution and its use by governments / advertising / celebrities / influencers. That’s not saying no good has come of it. Just a net negative.
Positive. Info=Good
Totally positive. Being able to read non-mainstream takes on current events has been massively liberating. Tho I have to say -- I do not have social media on my phone. I onyl consume it on desktop.
It brought me to one of my best friends, a couple fun adventures, some (previously) great customers, the start of a career, the start of a business (the one he started) and most of our sales early on. After 2020 I dropped all socials completely until nostr last summer!
Summary. Personally, a pretty good experience, with very thoughtful and decisive usage. Culturally for me (just barely gen z), I think corporate social media is a net negative. Since getting off, I think it has affected friends and family drastically in the past 3-4 years.
.. here is what I found after quitting social (and smart phones) for three years before I took on nostr Social media is like a gym for the mind .. you do want to train for at least 30 mins daily .. Max two hours if you wanna be a builder .. More than that , it becomes a job .. the truth is jobs in real world are far more exciting..
lots of wasted time. lots of things learned. overall I'd say positive. specially since I started using it intentionally
It depends on your usage.
Up until recently it's been a net negative. Just pure doom scrolling my evenings away. I had positive exchanges when I was looking into cyber security and learning python but other than that it's been pretty terrible. More recently I've been learning through #nostr and although there is still the scrolling through, it feels like I'm actually here to learn and im not being manipulated by an algorithm.
On and off YouTube addiction
Net negative. Like really really net negative. Until Nostr. Now it's supremely net positive.
Since my only social media experience is Nostr, I’d say it is positive overall. It’s not all flowers and candies, but definitely on a plus side for my mental health! 🐶🐾🫡🫂
Since I started not fooling around: net positive (for old platforms too)
net positive, used social media for getting info from the best in each filed I've interest in.. learned a lot, and always skip/discard spam, which compose most of it all..
Net positive because I got a lot of dates on MySpace, but from 2015-2022, my experience went downhill. Nostr has been postive. Even the arguments are respectful.
Depends on platform. Dropped FB 10 years ago. Screaming virtue signalling arguements and algorithmic Bs def negative Tested twitter 2 years ago, followed people on both sides of contentious topics and tried to engage in an open, sincere manner. Definitely not worth trying. Twitter is about embedded camps of opinion with constant toxicity. When the algos started throwing vids of people dying at me, off straight away. Negative Nostr is memes, comedy, shit posts and positivity but too engrossing sometimes as a result. That maybe cause it gives hope so I’d have to say net positive. I do love the supportive nature here. Not sure I can think of another platform where people share posts by strangers suffering depression or tough times and results in a stream of positive encouragement. That’s what humanity should be
in 2006 I conducted a study via viral chainmail on MySpace and accrued tens of millions of hits resulting in a successful app. I had unique insight on the impact of social media on people, and early-on feared the repercussions. Other than nostr I've been off social media for 4 years, and even still, prefer the other stuff.
10000% complete net negative. I don't go on fb anymore Perma ban from twitter Instagram 19 min a day timer Never had tiktok Telegram 20 min a day Nostr no algorithm I probably spend 20 minutes a day. total 1h vs 3 h a day before
On my life? Eh, I gave it up for 8 years until I found #nostr so I guess I would say it was a net negative before then. I think the better question is has it been a net positive or net negative for humanity?

nostr positivo, demais negativa, só manipulação e comércios as principais. nostr é vida
Absolutely net positive
Nostr is my 1st and only social media. No effect on my life. 🫡
Yes it has been
Been thinking recently about this and I do think it’s been a net negative. I had far fewer occasions to get angry or blackpilled, and more time being productive and fully present, when I spent zero time on social media. Nostr definitely included on all counts. And I have a really clear memory to show me this contrast because I had basically been on a social media fast for 10 years, 2010-2020. Not sure what I will do about this, especially now that I’m a parent 😅 on the one hand, it seems like an obvious choice to leave all social media, especially on a bad day. On the other hand, I’ve learned a great deal on faith, parenting, and art/professional fronts in Facebook groups, and made friends and money on Nostr. The thought that there is such promise on Nostr is keeping me here as much as habit.
Positive when I learned how to play it.
A year and a half ago, I probably would have said it had turned out to be a net negative, but then something radically different changed my perspective.
Meh. It’s a wash.
Positive, made many connections
Positive because I knew what I wanted out of it. In comparison to my friends, their experience was negative, until I told them how to use it.
Net negative. I have a crippling YouTube addiction and I'm trying to cut down on consuming those along with any "social media"-like website. This is probably one of the handful of times this year that I will check Nostr.
Spending time to consciously curate the kind of information you consume will be very helpful. >Youtube is quite responsive when you indicate 'not interested' and if you 'like' a particular video. It will improve your feed. >Deleting watch and search history can reset your recommendation algorithm. >You can also choose to watch videos solely from channels you've subscribed. Similar things should work for the rest of social media but unfortunately their algorithms are not that responsive. Nostr fixes this.
abso fuckin lutely positive. so many impressions and ideas and people and bitcoin. learning and speaking english, is what gives me a huuuuge advantage over my peers in my non-english speaking country. all my career choices turned out to be very good so far. also bitcoin will probably guarantee a life free of first world fiat slavery for me and my family. other peer are either heavily in debt already, or so piss poor that they will never move out of their shitty appartment. I give social media, especially twitter and the honest bitcoin maximalists credit, for making me understand bitcoin.
So so
100% net positive. I cannot imagine life without social media. The amount of things I learn everyday is absolutely staggering. The key has been to curate and filter out the information I consume. Nostr can take this to the next level for people like me, if we can get people to widely adopt this protocol.
Positive because know how to use the good side of it. But for society i would argue it is a net negative
net positive. without it, i never would have found other bitcoiners. #bitcoin #plebchain #nostr nostr:note1clnjq8sw9zpux94myn4atyutjud6hve6ym644r2gj773pkmfe90qtrrmah
huge net positive. the amount of information and inspiring stuff is staggering. Learning about Bitcoin alone is life-changing, not to mention health, psychology, religion, and all the rest of it. before using twitter and now Nostr, i only heard news from News.google.com and MSM clips. i do see need for balance however. Still need to go to a library and browse amongst the shelves or to a Meetup and chat with people.
Pros and cons to everything.
net positive. i met all of you because of it <3
Dramatic positive when I can control it instead of the other way around.
Absolutely positive in my case. I never used it, so it took away from my sight all the stupid talk from my circles. Then I started using it exclusively for: 1. Read Trump messages. But also HRC, Obama, Pelosi and this bunch just to help me start understanding who is who in America. 2. Read Q related messages 3. Read bitcoin related messages 4. Spread covid, Ukraine, and bitcoin related insights 5. Human interaction with normal and interesting people and AI bots on Nostr.
A net+
