If damus relay and nostr.build were nuked tomorrow, what % of nostr would instantly vanish? 🤔
None of the notes but a lot of the images/videos. Too many other relays already aggregate from Damus.
Agreed. This is one reason Blossom sounds awesome.
Where might I look to learn a bit more about blossom?

Thanks Sleepy!
Ma pleasure!
This is fucking sweet also 🔥
CDN of media ... it would be a disaster I imagine but the actual text content in notes would be fine I think.
Which I guess then begs the question for me... Is there a simple method for self-hosting your own webserver with a free subdomain or even domain (from some generous TLD holder) akin to cloudflare? Maybe Umbrel and other node packages could use @nostr.build or something akin and allow the user to basically run their own web server 24/7. Who cares if they're on 56k. What matters is that the message gets through right? And it would decentralize the media side of things completely. Couple of jpegs a day accessed by a handful of people shouldn't be too straining on your internet connection. I'm sure even a simple GUI that let's you control your upstream rate for the web server could be done? I know I personally would run my own webserver if I knew it wouldn't get packeted to kingdom come.
I think if Damus and nostr.build went away, most of nostr would still be around. Nostr is nothing like Bitcoin, but with ~15 relays, I would still trust it far more than a federated Bitcoin custodian.
Damus relay? nostr.build? Never heard of 'em. Must be those dirty city-dweller back-alley relays. I stick to relays that directly represent the people I follow like relay.uxto.one, pyramid.fiatjaf.com, chorus.mikedilger.com, and hodlbod.nostr1.com, you know, well-respected high-quality decent reliable trad relays, straight from the source, pure, clean, artesian springs, not some middle-man, used up, hand me down events transmitted through piles of snakes.
Are you even decentralized bro?
How should new (non-tech Davy) users navigate their relay set up? Trying to work on onboarding FAQs and this is a topic I see questions about and had myself too.
If they don't know any better, they should just choose some relays. Maybe 2 inboxes and 3 outboxes. I would like some trustable sources of knowledge that monitor relay capability and suggest only relays that suit for those purposes. Right now someone can easily choose an inbox relay that is paid (and that will not suit) or an outbox relay that specializes (and that will not suit either). I've been hoping someone writes a relay tester and maintains such a list for the community -- in fact we should have competing lists. But it hasn't happened yet. I manually went through many relays and picked 20 to suggest to new gossip users which I verified accept new users notes and serve them back out, which I recently shared here: nostr:nevent1qqstunh264x95nqvmdjt8y8h49e07fq7f4h2k4g7q3eh04htgg2yk9qpypmhxue69uhkx6r0wf6hxtndd94k2erfd3nk2u3wvdhk6w35xs6z7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcpr4mhxue69uhkummnw3ez6vpj9eukz6mfdphkumn99e3k7mf0v8xg9j
I'm sorry but is this relay grass-fed, organic? I'm actually allergic and can only use tor.
My fingers are itching! 🐶🐾🤣🤣🤣🔥
ive got a relay somewhere on my start9 server running over tor for people ... https://image.nostr.build/803bf34cb8540169e4aea193c35f6c83b4bbba31c36cec531e92359205d80d2a.gif
this is why supporting NIP-65 and NIP-42 and NIP-11 is so important, and yes i remember NIP-66 is in early stages to help you find relays it would be great if there was more of this kind of use pattern, it's more jam resistant than the current state of things
Nuking nostr.build would be way more noticeable, it seems like the vast majority of images posted on nostr are hosted there. I really wish IPFS or WebTorrent were more performant, would be a great way to decentralize image hosting so that users who have loaded the image can seed it to others who wish to load it. In the meantime, a stepping stone towards fully decentralized images on nostr could be if more clients + relays implemented NIP-95 to allow images to be directly sent to relays and distributed that way.
Blossom fixes this, I hope.
Nostr.build would be more of a problem, I think that's everyone's go to. That said, Primal users wouldn't have a problem. I was happy to see that Amethyst includes a bunch of options. I wonder if people would end up going back to imgur or one of those image hosting sites? https://image.nostr.build/d785e8d53486e3e88b921b3b63fa8bc5016ce8cdbe54d8cfe4b70c7c98dc4d54.jpg
Didn’t @jb55 nuke the Damus relay a few months ago and basically nothing happened?
Not sure I don't remember such an event This is good if true, also big
This is when you were AFK contemplating moving to a new country to run lessnode.io
Yes. You'll find some posts related to it with the hashtag #thenukening
Here's Will's initial note about doing. Happened back in November. He nuked it the same day a few hours after this so it wasn't even like people had ample notice to backup their data. Didn't seem to have much of an impact though. Which is good. @note1cyan5h0sxnunhhsky9d0n2j2w7y5m9yrhzg0u4xx869kul7dxxjq4eadd4
This may have happened while you were AFK for a few months. As @JeffG said, Will did this. And nothing happened. No one noticed. Decentralization won.
I don't think the damus relay going down would hurt to many people, but losing nostr.build would take down a massive amount of the media. Pictures and video continue to be a single point of failure. Hopeful things like blossom or personally hosted nostercheck servers (still waiting for more clients to support personal nip-96 servers besides coracle and nostur) help solve this soon.
