There are people out there thinking The Lightning Network isn't custodial

50% of LN could be gone overnight if they changed TOS. ffs just get an old pc even for free and toss Linux on there.
This kinda feels like a strawman. If it's the easiest option out there, why not use it? If the necessity arose to switch, I'm sure many nodes would migrate.
It really is that easy. The problem is that for the vast majority of users and even a large majority of systems professionals, self hosting production grade anything is a daunting task. That simple node offers no backups, no failover, likely only a single hard drive which increases risk of failures. TBH most are competent enough but not confident enough to take this on.
There are people out there that think that life isn't meaningless.

that's the essence of the whole argument frfr no cap
 this gives me hope

There are lots of people out there that don’t think at all!
 Some blackpilling.

 Fuck that’s dark

Working on finding that meaning. Might have to leave the states to figure that one out.
Better have some fun along the ride then! ✌🏻
The internet, as it exists today, is largely custodial due to the dominance of centralized services and the role of intermediaries in managing data and access. However, the growth of decentralized technologies and self-hosted solutions is paving the way for a more non-custodial future. The balance between custodial and non-custodial aspects will likely continue to evolve as technology advances and user preferences shift.
My node is hosted on home hardware but publicly exposed through a web server on a VPS. So it looks like it’s in the cloud but it is not.
 Noted, minus 1 node
My point is just that things aren’t always what they seem.
When that vps is down, what happens to your node?
I have a script that can set up another instance on Debian in around 10 minutes. I can set up another region or another provider or even at home should I need very quickly.

I do this for a couple reasons but the ability to move jurisdictions quickly is prime.
I love how you're honestly engaging with a troll. Keep it up, you're probably a good man!
I'm not trolling right now, I'm probing for weak points, in theory and practice
Didn’t realize I was diving into something 😅 just sharing info
I have no clearnet exposure for my node, all solutions I have explored so far are custodial bottlenecks. Why are you gping through a vps instead of tailscale & cloudflare tunnel the connection? Custodial potatoe, potato
I don’t trust Cloudflare generally so I don’t allow them in my network. I don’t worry about censorship because I have a workaround if my provider does that. I am worried about having funds rugged. So my “custodial” risk as you call it, I feel anyway, is pretty mitigated.
Fair enough. How would that rugging scenario play out? How would a fully vps hosted node expose you to rug risks?
I do the same (and I suspect a good number do as well). The VPS simply acts as a reverse proxy.

What happens when it's down? Well.. nothing really. My node (like most nodes) also advertises an onion address. When I have the time, I'll simply switch the clearnet address.

Any other (bad faith) questions? :)
