a life long avowed agnostic, i recently came to the realization that i do believe in good and evil, which unfortunately i think does mean that i definitely believe in god
confirmed not a nihilist
god believes in you.
“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Shakespeare. Hamlet. Act II, Scene 2
that’s provably wrong lmao 😂
You said yourself that you “believe” in good and evil, right? Your beliefs are just thoughts, Lisa. Nothing more than that. People believe lots of things. Be careful not to mistake the popularity of a belief for the probability of it being true.
nihilism has no place here 🤷
Agnostics sure are fun aren't they? I'm glad you've been able to take a step towards finding truth.
🙏🏻
I'm not following, why would the belief in good and evil require you to believe in God? Couldn't your subjective take on good and evil differ from what any "God" promotes? I think I'm just making myself more confused 🤣
Interesting. I used to conflate god with religious dogma, and I didn't have great associations with dogma.
It's good to be a heretic 😊. I think we could all agree that we believe in truth(works in tandem with the order of the universe vs at odds with), and that would mean some things would be more true than others.(the very basis of science) Whether or not something intelligent created this spectrum, or it was random accident could be debated, but nevertheless we find ourselves in a system of immense complexity and order "spun" from chaos.
That's a wild leap to make.
yes that's a big leap; i'm spiritual enough to believe in some sense of good and evil, and karma, but i don't believe in a god nor any specific religion
my perspective is that god doesn’t exist in a world that has no good and evil; hence if one exists the other suddenly takes shape as well i am aware that this discussion is all downstream of ineffable concepts that require experiential interaction with to fully grasp; im not sure it’s something that easily transmitted via text to a broad audience, especially given the preponderance of existing conceptualizations around the term “god”
yes, it all depends on the conceptualization of god for many people the subject is laden with a lot of trauma, like i'm very wary of "oh god exists, so everything in <pick holy book> is true and we all need to dogmatically follow that, no matter the consequences, and stop being curious about this world at all" i have some intuition of what "good" means and it is not that but more abstract conceptualizations might make sense, like how process philosophers such as Whitehead end up with some concept of god that's wayy different from what's commonly thought of, i dunno... i think the whole subject is inherently unknowable and mysterious
It is the absence of God which makes me reckon with good and evil.
You hit on a logical truth. It makes sense. This thought experiment helped me, so take it for what it’s worth. Every system needs an objective standard that exists outside that system against which to measure things. The thermometer or the ruler exist outside the experiment, they have to in order to measure anything. We cannot say anything is good or evil without an objective standard that exists outside of ourselves, exists beyond humanity. You cannot make a value judgement on things that are better or worse, “gooder or eviler.” Otherwise, logically, you are only making a subjective measurement that is just as valid as the one calling the evil thing “good.” Without God defining good or evil, we become the arbiter of good and evil and thus try to make ourselves God. God must be outside of Creation, not a part of all that is, in order to be objective and not defined by the Creation itself. In order for you to call a truly evil thing, evil, which we know exists, there must be an objective good against which to define that evil thing.
