blockchain-based domain name service is actually a good idea. it's probably the only non-retarded NFT-like use-case I have ever seen, and it's the second thing anyone ever managed to do with any blockchain. I wouldn't discount the whole idea because some developers are misusing it, just like they misused NFTs to sell pictures of cartoon kittens. ideally, the NFT should store attributes that point to IPFS resources, eepsites, or blinded cryptocurrency addresses.
I 100% agree with you bro. That's why I'm shocked to see that Brave Browser REMOVED support for IPFS. Ethereum name service costs $3 to update, who is going to pay this for each blog post? That's why we keep our static PGP key on SimplifiedPrivacy.eth but no other content However, Solana names are cheaper to update, and faster to access queries. But Brave was the only one resolving those names. This move by Brave shows the industry doesn't get it. They are happy about Google search balances, but not the real use case of websites.
Do you know if it’s possible to host your own nip5 on an eth ens?
you can host any static file served in a web browser
Is there any documentation for how to do this?
hey I actually replied too quickly before, you can serve up the json file for the name... but the nostr client would need to be configured to check it off ENS. Even if you made it, you'd have to convince your fellow nostr family members to use it as well. The good news though is Session messenger already works like this now
yup. I also bought a SNS domain instead of a ENS domain. it's far from perfect and nobody seems to care to make it better despite how useful it can be but I was still very excited for an opportunity to play with it. I can't even issue SSL certificates against it. it is just redirecting to a traditional domain, and only in brave browser.
you should point it to IPFS, not regular IPs
