It might make sense to support OP_CAT if Luke's filters get added to the core client at the same time so that the amount of spam could be dramatically reduced. Otherwise I think it just creates too many variables & is likely to make serious network attacks possible. nostr:nevent1qqs8cn4ruaxyet7yr0ahazw8phtwc3dj9h9snycgd34a3kafwuqfnvgpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7q3qu8lnhlw5usp3t9vmpz60ejpyt649z33hu82wc2hpv6m5xdqmuxhsxpqqqqqqzv7g07e
Filters have no effect on the network.
The network is just a giant filter, yes they do.
If it's a consensus rule it can work, mempool policy means nothing
I'm interested in what Ava killed... Luke seems to have been right over & over when it comes to how to build a more secure & robust system. And the compromises seem to have repeatedly weakened bitcoin. Adding something that people who are openly hostile to bitcoin want, without putting any limits in place seems like a really bad idea. Even Ava seems like a shitcoiner who is pretty openly hostile to bitcoin half the time. https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2024/01/11/steward-of-bitcoin-software-explains-why-she-nixed-an-acrimonious-code-debate/
I'm neutral on OP_CAT but that article and it's predecessor are such a joke, legacy media brain. Luke opened the PR in bad faith, knowing that a large number of devs opposed the change, then some shitposters started encouraging twitter-addicts to start dogpiling on the repo... Try finding a single PR with more than three NACKS from regular contributors that was merged! The repo is for technical discussion of changes, if you want to build consensus for a conceptually controversial change that lots of non-technical stakeholders have opinions about, you do it through other channels and the homestretch happens on the repo, like segwit, assumeutxo, etc. We should be vigorously debating these ideas but the repo is not the venue to debate an idea once serious opposition to it is presented by a small chorus of contributors.
if you want to move spam off the network you should support OP_CAT
The spammers who are openly hostile toward bitcoin & trying to attack the network in increasingly troublesome ways want OP_CAT... Why should I want something that people who explicitly talk about attacking bitcoin want themselves?
So then in your world anyone you disagree with can stale Bitcoin development by being very loud and supportive towards any potential change I hope you realize what a silly outcome that would be
People who have been actively & openly working to attack bitcoin (explicitly in their own words) want something because it would improve their ability to attack bitcoin. You cannot imporve bitcoin by making it easier to attack. People who do not think adversarially should be just totally dismissed when it comes to what that want to do to improve bitcoin. We live in an adversarial world, and in this case you don't even have to guess about whether this one might be used against us or not, it absolutely will be.
Do you know that OP_CAT makes it easier for them to attack Bitcoin or is this just the impression you have from people talking on social media? Again, is it the case that anyone wanting to roadblock changes to Bitcoin as far as you're concerned only has to proclaim they will use the change to attack Bitcoin for you to turn against it? It seems it would be more productive for you to form your own opinion about the quality of a change rather than base your opinion on your fear of what others might do.
