Maybe I should spend less time fixing the inner problems of gossip reliability when so few people use gossip.

Maybe people aren't using it because of something else that needs fixing first.

Or mabye it is just that people don't use desktop computers anymore.

I would love to have usage statistics but I will not violate your privacy.
I rarely use desktop to be honest!
I will try your client… I read that it is a bit difficult to install for non-techies
There are packaged releases for lots of platforms. You don't have to run off of 'master' branch.
I can speak for Ubuntu only but I installed it and upgraded many times without a glitch. So easy that I ended up using non-master branches regularly.
I stopped using it over a year ago though because it offered no zaps and Mike made it clear he would never add them.
 Focused on privacy ???
I was talking about installation ease. I'm not sure what you're asking here.
I thought they didn't implement zaps for privacy reasons, but I'm already reading the other comments 👀
What Mike means ist that he does not know how many users are using gossip because it does not use any telemetry in order to respect its users privacy.
Gossip has zaps. It doesn't have wallet connect.

For zaps you pick an amount and it gives you a QR code. You scan that with your phone wallet to pay it. Notes show zap totals (and will show the individual zappers in the future).

Good feedback.
I just zapped you from primal (webapp) with a single mouse click. That's a zap capabilty!
Use the client that serves you best. I'm glad you can one-click zap me. Please do it whenever the spirit moves you.

I'm not complaining that people aren't using gossip. I just wanted to know why people choose the apps they do and if I should refocus on something that is more important than the deep-internals I've been bogged down in. You've been very clear and it is helpful, thanks.
As a non-developer it was exceptionally easy (on Mac at least).

Just gotta find the right file on GitHub (they’re labeled) and basically download it and drag the thing into your applications folder, same as anything you download outside of the App Store 🤙
I use mobile majority but a client on my laptop is a great thing to have.
I'll try it. I just forget about it.
Gossip is a beautiful client 🫂
I still want to be a regular gossip user but I found serious barriers getting gossip and any other client to use one secret key. It forced me to abandon gossip basically. One Android client would crash trying to use the ncryptsec because the memory allocation required by the code is absurd on Android. Just my .02.
 That is interesting.

Few clients support ncryptsec. You can export as a regular nsec if you want (it scares you into not doing it... but in the current ecosystem you have to).
Your client is the only one I use on desktop
Nostr barely works on desktop. I use phone even at my desk.
I don't know how people can use those tiny little keyboards. When I press a letter, something like 4 buttons get pressed and it just picks one of those. Then I'm just doing more backspaces than letters.

And then there just isn't much screen real estate.

I use my phone as a computer when I must, for podcasts, and some puzzle games. Otherwise I use my computer as a computer.
Id prefer desktop when I’m at my desk but I haven’t found any client that I like or works. Coracle seems to have the best web experience and primal is somewhat ok but it has bugs that haven’t been fixed in ages - seems like the team doesn’t care about web as much as they do about mobile - which kind of makes sense.

All other clients have a host of issues that makes them difficult to use or nowhere near as nice as mobile
Gossip worked extremely well on the desktop.
I haven't been able to find another native desktop client that came anywhere near it. Its only problem is the lack of zaps.

You say 'nostr' barely works on desktop - did you try Gossip?
I'm open to suggestions for other desktop clients.
Nostrudel has been my go to on desktop
Me too occasionally, but its still not a native desktop app.
It's not? Look I'm pretty ignorant to all this so learning as I go
I might have missed a native desktop nostrudel i guess, but i doubt it. Correct me if i'm wrong please.
If it uses your browser, its not native.
These clients seem to be designed for phones and use the browser infrastructure, then they get slightly changed for the desktop. As a result they are slow, clunky, usually rather buggy and are huge resource hogs.
I don't have the knowledge or understanding on this to be able to speak to it. That's why I thought it was a desktop. Are you saying that to be a desktop it is system based and not browser based?
Fewer desktop users certainly, but also your attitude to zaps is important (for me anyway).

I'd love to use Gossip again.
I'm not sure I follow. What is my "attitude to zaps"? Is it the lack of wallet connectivity, my concern about legal issues? That makes sense but I'm not sure it is what you are saying.
I did say I hadn't used it for over a year now. There was no wallet connectivity and you made comments that led me to believe you had no serious plans to add anything like that. Even now I still watch github to see if any relevant changes are being implemented.

More recently you've made your legal concerns clear. I can't fault you for that, but was disappointed that the possibility now seemed even more remote.
You can Zap with gossip using your phone wallet. I takes like 10 seconds, gossip shows a QR code, you pay it with a lightning wallet on your phone.
I guess you're joking, but in case not ...

Its absurd that my desktop client needs a phone to work.

10 secs is a slight exaggeration.
Find the phone, load the wallet, enter login details, set the zap in Gossip, scan QR code with phone, ...

Compare that convoluted procedure to the single mouse click I use to zap with any other nostr client on my desktop.
Have tried several times using gossip on linux. Everytime i encounter issues. Ergo i turn to web based clients that tend to work.
Would love to see it on mobile.
I use it constantly. The lastest version seems to work much better. I think the features most people will miss is automatically loading videos, audio and Youtube content. It's also hard to interpret the emojis, since they are all one color. Personally, I can live without all that.

What I would like to see is better loading of referenced notes from people I don't follow. Many times they just never load for me.
I really like Gossip. I’ve been using it sporadically pretty much since the beginning. My main gripe is that without a global feed, I have to go elsewhere to find people to follow. I understand why it’s not included, but I find it hampers my use.
Good news then, because global feeds will be supported pretty soon. I have a hacked-version already working on a private branch, but it's hardcoded to damus relay for the moment.
That’s awesome! I can’t wait to give it a go. Thanks for all your hard work. 🙏🏻
Maybe people are just too busy enjoying real life to bother with gossip reliability. Who needs drama when you have a good book and a cup of tea? Just a thought 🤷‍♀️ #LiveYourBestLife

Please don't abandon gossip!
I have no intention of abandoning gossip. I was musing about priorities. I've been bogged down in internal stability stuff and I thought maybe I should poke my head above water and see if there were any deal-killer issues I should be resolving.
I personally don't use gossip because the GUI is sluggish and slow.
 Thanks for the feedback.
i use it daily, just wish you can use custom emojis for likes and see who liked your posts, i can live opening gifs and videos on seperate browser
Your in luck because I put reacting with emojis on unstable this morning. The second half (who liked) is not there yet though.
