Alright, help me. I know Samsung does not have a great reputation for digital privacy
What is the current status of that? Are they still a lot worse for privacy minded people than a Google Pixel?

Asking because I am being severely tempted to trade in my Pixel 8 for an S24 because the first party features and customization look incredible.

I want to check my assumptions.

I don't know who I'm rooting for in the Google v Epic Games case. I think Epic Games?

@e1ef0c19 How do you bring that idea down to the level of a non-tech savvy consumer who is just looking for a new computer at their local tech store? How do you integrate that into a pitch for the average user who doesn't care how the sausage is made so that you don't leave behind this value?

@eb6cb889 yeah, that's all I could come up with from an integration standpoint as well - theming. Not a compelling reason to switch ecosystems.
@5e349cc3 I can see that. The other version of that is that it's just not as good. So it's for a particular market. "I need to write in a document, I don't care if it's MS Word or whatever." But of course you'd leave that out of something like a promotional video or billboard. I think they're valid selling points, but not bullet proof for sure.
@5e349cc3 Chromebooks get away with similar levels of "valid but imperfect" selling points, which is why I'm entertaining it.

@e1ef0c19 I get where you're coming from. More to think about. In a hypothetical example where I had Google levels of ad spend, it would irresponsible to market the 'free as in cost' part of the ecosystem without incorporating some way to fund those projects. At the same time you don't want to lose the competitive advantage of 'free as in cost'. How to balance...
Would it be fair to say that Linux distros give you integration between open source software solutions similar to the integration you see on macOS? To put it another way, is there more benefit to using FOSS applications on Linux rather than just using FOSS apps on Windows or Mac?
I'm trying to come up with a succinct value proposition for using Linux or buying a Linux laptop for average users. This is one benefit.

> When you use Linux, most of the software is free.

That's in contrast to the other ecosystems where that's not guaranteed.

Here's another one: No need to make annoying accounts for every app.

Thoughts?
Want to learn if and how to make the use of a hashtag a thing while aiming for it to be valuable to the community. I feel like that kind of thing is too organic to reliably make happen.

I hate how tech companies get to pummel the world into resignation with their privacy-invasive products while privacy advocates are looked at like fringe weirdos who ask for too much.

The new case I bought in order to cope with this announcement just arrived. Trying to trick myself that I have a new phone. Glad to come back to gray but we'll see how much this will assuage me, lol.
Waiting for a size comparison of the Pixel 8 with the Pixel 7 and 6. The latest is smaller than the P7 which was smaller than the P6. Just go old school and stack one on top of the other!

And imagine how much smaller the Pixel 8a could be?

@6adf234e yeah, I go back and forth on whether I will try GrapheneOS one day.
I got my phone in part because I wanted one phone to last me as long as possible. 5 years of security updates fulfills that.

But man do I feel susceptible to whatever Google announces tomorrow...

I still think that Gnome is a nicer looking DE than Plasma, but I've grown to really like Plasma. There's something about it where I want to have both available at all times, lol

@e7f7ab20 it depends on the specs. I have a low end Chromebook that's got I think the equivalent of a Pentium processor and it runs good for the specs. The most in terms of Linux that I ran is the Linux developer environment. It also worked about as good as things running in the browser.
So it seems like Google's new Chromebook Plus program is what prompted Adobe to offer a web version of Photoshop. We take those.

Social media is such a tempting place to vent, but it's one of the worst places to vent lol
@55e2b80e fun fact: I switched from popOS to Fedora because it was one of only two options that had secure boot. That was it lol Been on Fedora ever since.

@dd0abf19 I do count Chromebooks as Linux, but that's not the Linux I would like to recommend, as much as I secretly love and own a Chromebook.
I feel like the only reasonable way to recommend Linux to non techy people is to point them to buying a Linux preloaded machine. Their experiment with the Linux ecosystem needs to fit within the paradigm of a return policy.

Oh Discourse, how I've missed you
 Today:

* Closed a ticket on whether to retire Twitter account (no, but I wish, but I can't)
* Voicing thoughts on Plasma Wayland only and it's impact on Fedora perception to creatives
* Gave more opinion on the potential comeback of Fedora Atomic brand
* Got my content backlog back in order
 Yay shiny new 4.2 Mastodon!!!
In the mood to have a live stream on in the background, like maybe a FOSS developer working on something. Working on the weekend no fun, lol.
@3c667485 as someone who regularly sees decisions or potential decisions be misinterpreted by a community, thank you for repeating the fact that Leap is not being killed off, lol.
 nostr:npub1rnjwv8da8gxyg5xdundvwcg9r489cnuaa842pzes005ezq9q0jvsgrvtmy I just switched from #Kinoi...
@716bfc48 you know, I am still spooked by tiling window managers, but you may have convinced me to give it a shot. I guess if I can at least find my way back to the terminal I can find my way back to Kinoite.
I want to try a new Fedora spin every release. Right now I'm running Kinoite but it's only been about 2 months since I started using it. Trying to decide if I stick with Kinoite for the next 6 months after Fedora 39 or try something new. It would most likely be the Budgie Spin or Onyx, the immutable version. Though Silverblue is in contention... #Fedora #Kinoite #Budgie #Silverblue
If you want art - and I mean the good stuff that makes you take a moment, breathe, and consider the art - follow @50d68e72. Dropping weather reports that could have come from a Ghibli movie.

If you're running social media for an open source project on Mastodon, you should be using the hashtag for your project in every post, in my opinion. People will look for content about your project with the hashtag. The account you run is presumably a great source of information for that.

Don't be afraid to to take ownership of the hashtag for your project. There is no algorithm, so you need to give your posts every chance to succeed.
On second thought, maybe I should read an article about Current Thing before giving an indirect hot take about it. 😅

I've been on the other end of those hot takes and it's a sucky feeling to come across them.

 @f1276c57 that's so interesting. I wouldn't have expected that!
Ain't it great when a big proprietary software company steps in it and there are free and open source alternatives waiting in the wings?

Every time that happens it highlights the power of FOSS. I wonder if folks will start adding open source to their criteria when looking for something to switch to.

These anti-consumer decisions are what give FOSS an opening and get people to tank the switching costs. ☕
Will a Firefox account also backup your config with extensions and such? I am getting very invested in my container tab and tab group workflow, but if I want to experiment with other Fedora spins then I would like to make this easy to migrate. #Firefox
On the bright side, because my workflow is so browser dependent, solving this problem of my Firefox setup is the only thing that keeps me from slapping another distro on my thinkpad. If I can get the Flathub Firefox, then I'm covered.
 USB C coming to iPhone

Ha got em!
Using Proton Calendar is like 75% a good experience, but the reason it doesn't go all the way is all around how calendar invites work.

Sometimes it will pick up that I have an invite in my inbox, but sometimes it won't or I won't be sure whether it picked up an update to a change in the event. Even with that I think it sometimes works, but because of this janky feeling workflow I end up double checking in a way I don't do on Teams.
If you are looking for a polished, private, free and open source alternative to Google Keep and Evernote, use @accce29a

Might be my favorite FOSS app in general.
A barometer for open source software user experience:

If using the app feels more like an act of charity than something you love to use, there is work to do.
John Green once called smartphones "adult pacifiers" and I think about that a lot.
Time to be a little mischievous

*logs into Mastodon on phone despite knowing that's not good for him*
ngl, when i see folks getting laid off who i know are best in class, it makes me not want to consider working for the company that laid them off

many times the reality is not so simple, but it's still not a good vibe

@5e349cc3 the lowest I would go in terms of tech savyness is someone who I know is at least into tech, because they know enough to be dangerous. I could recommend Linux to someone with an MKBHD level of tech knowledge or interest. But lower than that it would have to be a purchase.

@527c3522 Corollary: it's ok to ignore comments that could lead to arguments or difficult discussions. Depending on the platform, it may not be conducive to nuance. If a topic requires nuance, good faith, and chill temperature, don't engage on platforms that work against those things. Choose your battles or your response may be the thing that ends up in the next Linux news YouTube video.
