According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, Vermont, “The Burlington Intl Airport has hit 86 F today breaking a long standing record high temperature of 82 set back in 1891. This is also now the new all-time October record high temperature.”

I tried quite a while ago...
@b42b2f3c @06965f76 I took a look at them but was a bit confused about the plans. I have no idea if this will catch on, so it’s hard to figure out what plan to use and when to know to scale it if I was to choose the lowest plan.
Question for anyone who runs their own #Mastodon instance or follows #FediTips:

I am considering starting my own Mastodon instance for my small town, which would be part of an upcoming class on Mastodon for my local library.

I’m looking for suggestions for turnkey or near turnkey options for hosting my own instance. I am tech savvy so I know how to SSH, use *nix platforms, things like that. But I don’t have the time or inclination for unending tech tinkering. Thanks!
@8b189dd1 Thanks for that link. It seems like this might be the kind of project that could partner with the library, but perhaps would be separate in order to insulate the library from some of the bad fallout that could come from a project like this.

I should go looking on GitHub for some of that software—having a usable web interface would be key to this working!
Hey @8b189dd1 & any other #librarians out there, a question for you.

I’ve been thinking about the idea of a distributed library lately. A patron could list things (canning supplies, yard tools, books) they’re willing to let other patrons borrow under terms they set (e.g., 3 days max).

I can see issues here (insurance, librarian having to act as mediator if something goes wrong), but it could foster reduced consumption and community building. Curious as to your thoughts or any examples. Thanks!
@c28ce4e6 Very interesting idea! Two thoughts:

1. Reddit did something similar with /r/place. As an AFD joke they developed a central visual document anyone could place a pixel on, with a cool down period to the next pixel. Subreddits collaborated to create art while defending their “turf” from rivals.

2. Your point about a digital status board reminded me of the personalization of MySpace. Profile design what was part of the user’s expression, and would change over time.

- I'd stick with the Mast...
@8b189dd1 These are great tips, thanks!
I may teach a workshop on Mastodon at my local #library. I’m thinking of calling it “Social Media in the 21st Century: #Mastodon, #Pixelfed, & the #Fediverse”.

I’m going to keep things easy. I want participants to walk away with an account and seeing the fediverse as much an option as traditional social media.

A couple of questions:

1. Most newbie friendly free #Android app?
2. Suggested newbie friendly account/webUI settings?
3. What’s one tip you think every new Mastodon user should know?
I'm serious about the streaming suggestions. I'm partial to ghost stories 👻
@643c2077 Thisbis a public media account so I imagine you know of it, but Glynn Washington (of Snap Judgement fame) has a ghost story podcast called Spooked which is out of this world.

@9b033548 Are you finding your main timeline is filled with people you follow or random celebrities? I have quite a few people I follow there, but never see their posts. Don’t know if it’s because they’re not posting a lot or if Threads prioritizes celebrity content.
So Meta's #Threads gets #search capability. Just tested it out and it works as you would expect....
@9b033548 Threads is such a joke. I log in every once in awhile. All I see is celebrity post after celebrity post with no way of seeing anything from people I follow without the spam. I realize I’m not their primary demographic, but somehow they managed to make a less usable version of Twitter (at least it has lists and a chronological view so you can ignore the celebrity garbage).
