After two weeks off from Judo / self-defense (autumn break, then a cold), I was back in the dojo last night 🙌
We simulated fight scenarios so it was a lot of fun.
In one scenario, we ended with wrist grabs, which are becoming my favourites. I got to practice ikkyo, nikyo, and sankyo for a solid 30 minutes.
I’m starting to get the hang of it. I’m moving a little faster and I’m not thinking about technique as much. I’m paying attention to my opponent, seeing how she moves, and making adjustments. I just want to keep practicing!

You can count a fraction of something.
My daughter picked up the habit of saying “0”, then “1”. (I think she got it from school.)
I was surprised, but I think it’s a good habit for a kid to adopt.
It’ll probably help when she’s formally introduced to concepts like fractions & integers. There’s something between “0” and “1”.
Cut an apple into 4 equal parts.
4 people, 1 quarter each.
Conceptually, I think it may be easier for a child to grasp a quatity greater than 0 but less than 1 if they start learning "0" early.

Yesterday evening, I did something I thought I’d never do.
I grew up with the unquestionable belief that guns are bad. Period.
The gun violence that occurred in my old neighbourhood in Scarborough (Toronto) only solidified my belief.
Fast forward, I move to a country where gun culture is rooted in national defense. Public message boards openly share information about various shooting ranges. And so, after many years of living in Switzerland 🇨🇭, I started to question my belief.
Last night, I took things to another level and went to a shooting range for the first time. I used a rifle and a pistol.
The experience was not at all what I was expecting. People of various ages were present. There were many women present. It’s a sport like any other where training and practice (and BREATHING - who knew?) are necessary.
I was scared, no doubt. But ended up dedicating a large part of my time to theory and safety. Another huge chunk of time went toward finding the right position and alignment before shooting the rifle.
I must include that my instructor is an excellent teacher. He was very patient in explaining the historical context of guns in Switzerland, changing perceptions, and of course safety & theory.

Ikkyo. Nikkyo. Sankyo.1, 2, 3.
We did a cool exercise last night where we took turns defending ourselves against a series of "attacks" by fellow group members.
One by one, members of the group charged at the person defending themselves. The goal was to practice ikkyo, nikkyo or sankyo in a more stressful situation compared to a typical one-on-one.
I thought I knew the techniques relatively well until I had to apply them quickly and against partners I don't usually train with.
Lessons learned:
- Practice, practice, practice- I need to practice a lot more so that I don't think about technique per se. I'd like to achieve better fluidity in my movements.
- Since my focus is still on the elbow and wrist, I forget about how the rest of my body should be placed.
- Even though it was a simulation exercise, the pace and cadence of attacks impacted my ability to recall certain basics.
I'm looking forward to next week's class!

Last night in Judo / Self-Defence, we looked at Aikido Joint Locks, specifically first teaching (elbow), second teaching (wrist), and third teaching (wrist).
While our instructor gave the demonstration, I thought “circles, waves, & sword” to get myself in the mindset of the type of movement required.
Aikido is very fluid and beautiful. It’s incredible how a seemingly minor adjustment in positioning can cause max pain.
It’s helpful for me to write and share what I learn in English since my classes are in French. I guess this is a type of reflection / journal entry. It will be funny to look back and read my beginner notes in a few years.
Plus, I always appreciate the feedback you guys leave in the comments.
