Self custody is expensive. Until we can figure out how to scale it to people who are making $50/month incomes, opening and balancing channels isn't feasible for the general public.
For now, I trust custodial wallets more than I trust my bank.
Good question, not too sure. I think MOTIV might be helping some of these store owners with these connections, and they may be accepting Bitcoin as an intermediary between them and the suppliers. Not entirely sure though!

if it makes you transphobic to believe it is a net negative to humanity/freedom to affirm gender dysphoria as objective reality through:
- experimental surgical reconstruction
- chemical castration
- imprisonment for improper pronoun usage

tell that to the thousands of people that have expressed the long-held belief that there are only men & women - who have either lost their jobs, been imprisoned, or had their children taken away from the state for expressing such an opinion in the last 10 years
let's clarify here - I will not treat you any differently if you publicly or privately choose to believe and express yourself as a different gender than the one assigned at birth.
The moment you advocate that the law should punish those who don't agree with you is the moment you become my enemy.
the problem comes when the laws meet science here. law is being used to enshrine these new scientific discoveries or THEORIES as fact, when even the gender+ theorists know themselves it is all new and subject to change/evolve.
from my perspective I have never seen a transgender person or new gender theorist speak out against draconian speech laws like the ones in Ireland or Canada's C16.
Despite me loving Bitcoin and believing it is the only form of money rooted in objective truth and not theft, it would be completely hypocritical of me to advocate the arrest or ban of any proponent of fiat money, or anyone who said Bitcoin was a Ponzi scheme.

I just *personally* don't think these things are too complicated.

Outrageous price... I paid less for direct hosting back in 2006 with Megaupload (cloud space is deflationary... or should be)

for the price you are charging you should be vetting these things way better. I get that it's early days on NOSTR, we're all learning and building together, and people gotta eat...
but for creators (of which I am one of the most active on NOSTR) it's beginning to be a turn-off to pay absurd hosting fees... simple data hosting should simply not cost this much.
the bells and whistles should be separate like AI image gen, donation page etc. for people who want those things. most of us just need a host for .mp4s

Bitcoin is the perfect counter-example to "deflationary currencies mean people won't invest and build things because there is a better/safer capital return by just hoarding money".
There are hundreds of entrepreneurs, educators and early Bitcoiners that would be way wealthier in BTC terms today if they just hoarded their first BTC purchases instead of using that capital to build their businesses.
Instead, they built things THEY wanted from the world, spent Bitcoin to do it, created countless jobs, made big impacts, and likely have little to no regrets.
