@d72d5211 expensive is of course relative, but this is the calculation I made:

With Google, I'm paying £25 (lets round that to €30) per year for 200GB.

With NextCloud I'd have to pay for a server (€7.19 per month) plus a 200GB volume (€10.56 per month) so a total of just over €200 per year, before I even think about backups.

Is €200 per year expensive? I'm grateful that it's not a life-changing amount for me, but it’s enough that I need to think about it. And either way it's 6+ times Google's cost.

But, to be fair, the main issue for me wasn't even the cost, but rather that I was unable to import my existing data.
I'm always amazed at how many hardcore tech people 'don't have time for self-hosting', preferring...
@d72d5211 I’ve got a fair bit of stuff in my Google account. (About 200 GB worth of photos and docs)

The inertia is real!

I did actually play around with nextcloud recently but couldn’t for the life of me get it to even import my photos from Google drive.

Plus, the cost would be quite high compared to Google, once you factor in the cost for backups.

So unfortunately I have for now abandoned it again 😔
Huh. iOS 17 allows you to keep using your old passcode for 72 hours after you’ve changed it.

That seems like a non-ideal thing to do by default. And it certainly seems like something that should be highlighted really prominently when changing the passcode 🤔

I've noticed a lot of chatter about setting up Elasticsearch for Mastodon 4.2's new full text search over the last few days, including what hardware is required, how difficult is it, etc.

So I thought I’d write down my experience, including the hardware I'm running Elasticsearch on for my single user instance:
