@d72d5211 I’ve got a fair bit of stuff in my Google account. (About 200 GB worth of photos and docs)

The inertia is real!

I did actually play around with nextcloud recently but couldn’t for the life of me get it to even import my photos from Google drive.

Plus, the cost would be quite high compared to Google, once you factor in the cost for backups.

So unfortunately I have for now abandoned it again 😔
@0815bf56 huh, I'm amazed that you're finding it expensive... with Hetzner.com, I can get 800GB of disk for a VPS for €35/mo...
@d72d5211 expensive is of course relative, but this is the calculation I made:

With Google, I'm paying £25 (lets round that to €30) per year for 200GB.

With NextCloud I'd have to pay for a server (€7.19 per month) plus a 200GB volume (€10.56 per month) so a total of just over €200 per year, before I even think about backups.

Is €200 per year expensive? I'm grateful that it's not a life-changing amount for me, but it’s enough that I need to think about it. And either way it's 6+ times Google's cost.

But, to be fair, the main issue for me wasn't even the cost, but rather that I was unable to import my existing data.
@0815bf56 huh. A quick search just showed me this: https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/integration_google and this https://leavemealone.com/blog/moving-from-google-photos-to-nextcloud/ It might also be worth looking at PhotoPrism as a companion to NC... https://www.photoprism.app/
@d72d5211 @0815bf56 well, if you compare to getting Google services "free"…
@e7937812 @0815bf56 depends on what you mean by 'free', I suppose. Their 'free' stuff costs me more than I'm happy to pay, to be honest.
@d72d5211 @0815bf56 thus the quotation marks in my comment. 🙃
@e7937812 @0815bf56 heh - understood. I wasn't sure if you were being serious or not. 😉
