Always nice when an alumna of your university is named “Most Powerful Woman in Business” by Fortune Magazine. Congrats Karen Lynch, CEO of CVS, BS, Carroll School of Management, Boston College https://fortune.com/ranking/most-powerful-women/
Tomorrow it will have been 12 years since #SteveJobs passed away. Shortly after his death I wrote a reflection on how #Apple had impacted my life. Resharing here. Since then I’ve also been teaching iOS #Swift developers at Boston College, where I’m a professor, hopefully helping hundreds more (thousands via YouTube) to leverage Apple to reach their goals. Soar! 🦅 https://gallaugher.com/rungs-on-the-ladder-personal-reflections-on-the-passing-of-steve-jobs/
What a journey! Demoted adjunct professor shunned by her institution wins Nobel Prize with an innovation that saves millions of lives. https://apple.news/Ajrp2Ov36R4q-XFjiJFTSTg
The #AppleWatch displays are often a mystery to me. I have no idea why sometimes the day and date show in the calendar (which I want) and sometimes I see nothing. Note the center of two displays below.

Meta rolls out AI-generated stickers. Elon Musk "transitioning", cartoon Pol Pot on a throne of skulls, and SpongeBob with a rifle are among the images Gizmodo generated. https://gizmodo.com/meta-ai-stickers-generate-controversial-cartoon-images-1850898685
School kids nationwide who snuck phones into grade school classes just got nabbed as the U.S. Emergency Alert test goes off.
My former students remember our "United Breaks Guitars" example when covering Social Media. Well, former American Idol contestant Jax has shown how TikTok changes the vitality game. Learn how "I know Victoria's Secret," a feminist anthem and scathing critique of the firm, went wildly viral, leveraging that platform's ability to share and remix content. The firm's response and Jax's follow up provides a great example of how corporate critique can blindside an organization. https://open.substack.com/pub/profgallaugher/p/i-know-victorias-secret-jax-and-the?r=2ra1y&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

@a164b6a4 the filter is on an arm so I can slide it out when I don’t need it. I’ll use the light when there is no natural light or not much, and the filter when I’m below 3m but still have decent natural light. I will run tests though since I’m new to this. The light is only 4000 lumens and a 100° cone so it’s likely only useful for up close work. Hopefully I have some good options covered but I’ll be sure to post results.
I bought a Divevolk Sea Touch Max 4 Housing for iPhone for a trip to the Galapagos. This is one of the best reviewed iPhone housings out there. It allows full phone touch-screen access so you don't need to pair a housing over bluetooth & you can use any photo app with all of its features. I opted for the kit with the 4000 lumen light. I'll be sure to post videos so you can see how it performed. #Scuba #iPhone #Divevolk

Flooding in NYC. I grew up outside of NYC and lived in an area prone to flooding in NJ but we’ve never had anything like this in the City. https://apple.news/AQg3oq-H8Q1-hDHi6YClrJw
SciFi has taken up the "colony collapse" trope that bees are in danger. Apparently it's not true - there are more bees on the planet than ever before. Also: conspiracy theorists should note the NYT published this piece. There's hardly some sort of cabal hiding press that goes against a conservation narrative. When truth is found, it'll be reported on. When corrections need to be made, they will be https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/19/business/beekeeping-companies-colony-collapse.html
In Boston we’ve had one of our rainiest summer months ever and September feels like near constant rain. I’m wondering if climate change means Boston is becoming Seattle. Although I think Seattle summers are drier than the one we’ve had.

Do you teach Social Media? Here's a quick, stats-loaded pice on "The Swiftening" w/Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce. This'll be in v.10 of my textbook Information Systems: A Manager's Guide to Harnessing Technology, published by FlatWorld. Feel free to share with others! https://open.substack.com/pub/profgallaugher/p/taylor-travis-nfl-tiktok-gold?r=2ra1y&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web #BizTechBook #FlatWorld #SocialMedia #TaylorSwift #NFL #TravisKelce #TikTok #Business #Management #Education
Do you have any favorite examples of successful, results-oriented TikTok use by organizations? I’m sifting through examples for a new section of my IS Textbook & welcome suggestions. Planning on the NFL Taylor Swift example but welcome your favs, too.
Oh, please. Angry English Major writes a poorly framed schadenfreude piece on the falling value of Computer Science. I’ve already lived through many similar predictions from the uninformed such as “outsourcing will kill all the tech jobs” https://apple.news/AuxzHmdSJQTameT4H2rFWMw
Paying to get a high schooler a “scholarly publication” to help them on a college app. The scamming continues. https://www.propublica.org/article/college-high-school-research-peer-review-publications
The predictive texting in iOS 17 is pretty good.
Took a long time for Foundation on Apple TV to get going but season 2 ended strong.
A collaboration between Katz Deli and Nike sounds like an Onion headline but the sandwich is real https://apple.news/A8qxsqkiVQX2h6Zqa4mY-9A
I wish there were some easy UI driven resolutions to the common “repository is out of date” when trying to push from #Xcode to GitHub. I find this always trips up new students. Would like a one click “forget what’s in the current repo and commit & push what I have locally” since that’s almost always what they want to do.
Boston College bought Pine Manor College and is turning it into a ladder for climbing the American Dream. This summer Boston-area high schoolers attended a free residential program combining academic preparation in English, mathematics, and science with overnight adventures, field trips, and volunteer experiences. Joy Moore & Erick Berrelleza, S.J. are forces for good and advancing the BC mission. https://www.bc.edu/content/bc-web/sites/bc-news/articles/2023/fall/year-two-of-the-academy.html
Back in 2021 there were several articles about CAID, China's answer to Apple's ATT/IDFA for App Tracking. I haven't found anything recent. Is CAID dead? Does anyone have any references? Thanks! #Privacy #China #App
Ah - I should have checked Wikipedia! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAID_(technology) It was never implemented.
Elle Cordova is so clever and funny. Someone needs to give her a sketch comedy show https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cw5YUXWLmwB/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Updating a chapter on "Understanding Software" and am stating clearly that LLMs won't make programming go away, instead they will turn most everyone into a programmer. An even more vital skill is the ability to understand code, to be able to effectively follow the logic of and evaluate generated code, and understand if and how generated code will be incorporated into larger systems. LLMs can already generate knowledge worker. [1]
