No, no, no. Do not use AI to record audiobooks. I will promise right now that Nantucket E-Books will never use AI recordings for its audiobooks. We can all do better than this. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2309.03926.pdf
@b43fa85e I think the concern is those with lots of money/political pull will invoke this right to suppress scandals and whistleblowers. Less so the average Canadian, and more so big oil companies in Calgary.
The fourth issue of Quarter Up, our #pinball and #arcade newsletter, will be released later this month. You can find past issues at https://nantucketebooks.com/quarterup/

Unfortunately, AI for writing and images seems to appeal to people who have contempt for art. I am reminded of Duck Phillips in Mad Men, who thought advertising was getting an intern to "write a prose-poem to a potato chip."
My friend Tom has a new blog you may enjoy if you like #ttrpg. It's called Ponder Pond. At the intersection of recreational math(s) and table-top games. A recent post discussed the concept of fairness in games. https://ponderpond.substack.com/
@e0d204e8 The bare-bones HTML can be a little blunt. I need just a little bit of styling, something like readable.css adds a few kilobytes of overhead.
https://nantucketebooks.com/blog/2023/02/2023-02-28_a_very_odd_technical_problem.html A look back at my bizarre technical problem from last winter, where my phone suddenly started using a voicemail message I thought I'd deleted twenty years ago. Also mentioning Aqua Teen Hunger Force, the TV show that people refuse to believe is real when you explain it to them.
I'll be on IRC Wednesday, July 27, at 6:30 PM Mountain Time. I'm on LiberaChat, channel is #nantucketebooks Anyone who shows up will get an early reveal of the next publication from Nantucket E-Books, as hinted at in my last blog post.
I should probably make an RSS file on the site for just e-books. Time to gear up for another ride on the date/time zone merry-go-round (last time nearly broke me)
I have to say, I liked how Mastodon would just show the number of replies as "1+". This kept the focus on the conversation, not on what was especially popular or not.
Has a popular comic-book franchise recently entered the public domain? Consider the Rarebit webcomic template for your own adaptation. Rarebit allows you to self-host your webcomic, and all JS is open-source. https://rarebit.neocities.org/ (I am unaffiliated with Rarebit, I am merely passing the word along)
I watched a two-and-a-half-hour video essay tonight. I am of the opinion that if a video can explain the political consequences of the Bangladesh Bhola Cyclone in 20 min, then it should take 30-40 min tops to explain how The Lion King did *not* rip off Kimba the White Lion.
"Why do you use such an old computer at work? Why do you use Linux?" The simple answer is that my 15-year-old ThinkPad running GNU/Linux is faster than the office computer they bought last year. I don't have pop-ups from HP Smart, Lenovo Vantage, and McAfee bringing me to a halt every five minutes.
I'll be on IRC tonight, starting at 6:30 PM Mountain. Come talk to me about the e-books you've been enjoying, bugs you've noticed, and what you're enjoying on the platform. I can also share my plans for anonymous payments. irc.libera.chat, channel is #nantucketebooks
Tonight, I wanted to share some writing that's special to me. This blog post by Christine Lemmer-Webber (co-editor of ActivityPub) was a big part of why I moved forward with Nantucket E-Books as a free software project. "Give away your secret sauce", that always stuck in my head. Thank you, Christine. https://www.dustycloud.org/blog/why-i-am-pro-gpl/
@053f521c I liked it! I learned a lot about Van Gogh. I guess if you were hoping to seal actual Van Gogh paintings, it was lacking, and the Monet exhibit in Denver was better for that kind of thing.
One of the neat features in Shanty is !!DESC, which is used to write descriptions into the <head> of the HTML document. When you share a Nantucket E-Book through, say, Hangouts or Discord, that description gets included. Usually the cover art is included, too.
@d6c50095 "Uhhh, now, to be clear, uhhh, don't get it twisted, he's a toad, and he likes... potatoes. Just so my colleagues and I are on the same page."
