That seems like what needs to happen. Even in a "market place of ideas" and open debate, the "best ideas" don't always win when it's advocates suck or the public is too brainwashed. How ideas really survive is by getting power and using it.
How grounded is the setting? Is it hard sci-fi, or are things like psychics, magic, interdimensional beings, god-like beings, etc. allowed as well? (I've only read the first story, then skimmed around the the pdf you linked, but I didn't see anything like that).
Why the fuck would anyone want to be friends with a woman who did nothing to stop her bf's death, did nothing to help his murderer get caught, and will beg for forgiveness and corrective racial justice for the murderer while she sips her 100 dollar mojito on a Caribbean beach?
