@bb052609 I... I do not believe this!  in "ancient" times, most people drank their wine in a watered state, and acidity would not have been a big problem.  and, um, what on earth would toast do?? 

 @2c46aa33 I was shocked when I heard this too. I have no idea how the chemistry works, but it is the widely accepted story on the origin of the word.
