 I'm revisiting the word "toast" this morning and was reminded of one of my favorite tidbits:

Toasting someone with a drink comes from the ancient practice of putting a piece of toast in bad wine to reduce the acidity.

I hate the term personally.

 @bb052609 Could it not also refer to the biblical and pre-biblical sharing of bread and wine/water amongst friends, and with strangers? 
 @bb052609 is roasting someone a play on toasting? 
 @bb052609 I... I do not believe this!  in "ancient" times, most people drank their wine in a watered state, and acidity would not have been a big problem.  and, um, what on earth would toast do??
