Interesting. "Do not commit adultery" does precede "Do not steal" in The Ten Commandments. I've never thought about it before, but perhaps the commands were given in order of priority... 🤔 nostr:nevent1qqs8mucgwaslvhpgkyv7r9mgcuk9y7fe6zun8da587xsz43er3s0pmqpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgtczyznwy4v2d4qq3dnyvpa83mh4z8uhc2tmwqgxh4uej3putxrustl2zqcyqqqqqqgwf8gz6
yes, and rule number one is no idols or false gods, it's the most important rule at all, it basically forbids the practice of fetish magic and voodoo and cult membership
"Do not have other gods besides Me [Yahweh]" is the first commandment, and it is like the greatest commandment: "Love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:5).
While we're at it, "Honor thy father and mother" precedes "Thou shalt not kill."
Yeah, those who don't respect their parents might also be more likely to murder others...
Earthly fatherhood is a reflection of God the Father. Each person's first impressions of the fatherhood of God comes from his or her earthly father. So the first three commandments deal with our relationship with God, and the first after that deals with our relationships with our earthly parents. How we treat our parents is related to how we treat God. We can't control how our parents treat us, but we can control how we treat our parents. The purpose seems to be to form us in a humble obedience before God, which should carry over into our respect for earthly authority, especially that of our parents.
Adultery could be called the theft of virtue. The theft of trust. The theft of companionship. The theft of a mother/father of the children.
