I’ve tested out 6 Ledger hardware wallets over the years.

2 nanoS
4 nanoX

1 nanoS screen is now completely broke and won’t render the GUI

1 nanoX just gave me a “battery no longer charges” error and then upon using it again just performed a factory reset (presumably wiping the seed) without asking.

33% failure rate is pretty fucking unacceptable with ledger. I’m not using these devices actively even.

Just remember to backup in metal folks…

I was trying to get some manufacturer resiliency by using Coldcard and Ledger for a multisig, but I’m done with ledger after multiple PII leaks and critical HWW malfunctions

Just a PSA I guess…

IVE HAD TO TROUBLESHOOT TWO FRIEND PANIC ATTACKS DUE TO LEDGERS IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS.

LEDGER LIVE SUCKS TOO.
Many such cases. Ledger is the only HWW I’ve ever had to replace because of a display failure. I don’t recommend them to anyone.
Me too I've had both the hardware and ledger live fail on me. Avoid avoid avoid!
Im not too up to date on the latest HWWs (Bitkey, bitbox, foundation) but at least at the time I set these up ledger and coldcard were the only ones with secure elements that gave some level of protection against a physical attack.

Is anything worth testing out other than coldcard at this point?
I RECOMMEND BITKEY TO LESS TECHNICAL PEOPLE AND COLDCARD TO EVERYONE ELSE.

Does bitkey have Secure element on the HWW?

I know it relies on phone + hww + cloud backup, but ideally the HWW is actually has a secure element.

Looking more like coldcard is only reliable option on the market right now… given I’m not fucking with ledger nonsense anymore…. The unprompted factory reset that just went down with mine is absolutely terrible.

 What's wrong with Trezor?
No secure element. Easily hackable with physical access to HWW
Thanks for explaining your view, that helped me remember my thoughts on this.

My view is you need part of the seed saved on the device and part of it in your brain to avoid physical attacks on the device, so that functionality is more important than a secure element.

Trezor allows that with "13th word" seed setup
Passphrase / durress pin is definitely a good feature. But I do think having a device where the seed is not extractable with physical access is a must have.
I don't see how that would ever be possible without going all the way to a brainwallet
Sounds like the BitBox02 might fit your bill

do checkout Foundation and SeedSigner, neither have secure elements iirc
 YES.

IT IS A REASONABLY SECURE MODEL. SOMEONE STEALS YOUR HARDWARE, YOU ARE GOOD. SOMEONE STEALS YOUR PHONE, YOU ARE GOOD. SOMEONE STEALS BOTH, STILL GOOD.

VERY SIMPLE UX. AND INCREDIBLY HARD TO FUCK UP. PERFECT FOR NON TECHNICAL USERS.

MAIN TRADEOFF IS PRIVACY AND TRUST. A MALICIOUS APP SHIPPED BY BLOCK COULD DO DAMAGE. I FIND THAT UNLIKELY AND A REASONABLE TRADEOFF BALANCE FOR NON TECHNICAL USERS.
With the upcoming inheritance feature (assuming it’s free), it’s hard not to recommend it even to technologically competent people if they don’t plan to pay for an equivalent Unchained, Nunchuk, Casa collab custody plan with inheritance.
I've used two Ledgers, two Trezors, CC mk3, CC mk4, Foundation Passport, Seedsigner, and have a CC Q, on the way.

Absolutely obsessed with ColdCards and the degree of control they allow.

Definitely want to get my paws on a Bitkey one of these days, even if it just ends up being utilized as a pretty paperweight...
Foundation Passport is my main recommendation for non-technical people.
It's a good signer. Love the non-descript form factor.
 I recommend Trezor for both
How much money did you receive from Coinkite and/or NVK?

The Bitkey's lack of a screen might make it convenient but it also means that transactions are signed blindly. If tomorrow the provider gets forced to empty certain wallets, ... well, they don't even need the hardware wallet for that as they control the companion app and the server in a two of three setup. This is not "can't be evil". I'm not saying they are doing this but I prefer wallets that cannot do this even if the life of the provider depended on it.
THEY PAY US WELL BELOW MARKET FOR SPONSORSHIP OF RHR. SAME WITH OUR OTHER SPONSORS BECAUSE UNLIKE EVERY OTHER BITCOIN PODCAST MY OPINION IS NOT FOR SALE AND SPONSORS KNOW THAT.

MY FUND TEN31 IS THE ONLY EXTERNAL INVESTOR IN COINKITE. THAT IS A BETTER ARGUMENT FOR YOUR CONSPIRACY.

REGARDLESS, NEITHER IMPACTS MY OPINION AND RECOMMENDATION. WE FUNDED THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

I RECOMMENDED COLDCARDS FOR YEARS BEFORE THE INVESTMENT OR SPONSORSHIP. IF SOMETHING BETTER THAN COLDCARD EMERGES I WILL RECOMMEND THAT INSTEAD.

CHEERS.
Look, it's important to disclose your financial ties when making recommendations. Saying your opinion isn't for sale while downplaying other podcasters comes off as hubris. I wasn't accusing you of a conspiracy, just pointing out that a simple disclaimer about your relationship with Coinkite would have been appropriate.
Any good Bitkey tutorial videos to share with family / friends?
 Copy that.

I had to relocate funds for a ledger user recently.

The positive is I learned how to use Sparrow wallet through the process.

Anybody have constructive comments on the Nunchuk Honey Badger Wallet?
 How old were these devices?
FWIW, I thought the same and went with Coldcard and Jade. All is working just fine.
I have a Ledger Nano S from 2017-18, it only has some shitcoins on it from years ago but the display is pretty much dead, I need a magnifying glass to read it and it's not just extremely dim it's totally messed up too.I took my btc off the Ledger years ago, I have 4 Coldcards which are far superior.
