 I believe Jack Dorsey said that Nostr feels like twitter back in the early days. Others on here compare Nostr to how the internet felt like when it first started. I was late for the first two, but I think Nostr might be even better because it combines decentralized speech with decentralized money.

 How is this information obtained? 

 You can get it if you through the nostr sdk in python. However, there is a much straight forward way in the primal client if you go to the Explore it will give the current stats.  

 this is similar to asking how many users are using email or how many people browse the web. we really don't have an accurate count for those. we can have educated guesses and estimates though. nostr is no different here.
