I am not a lawyer.

While artists can purchase a license for this through traditional online sales and streaming channels, playing them in a podcast is uncharted territory.

Technically you created a copy for distribution.

Do you now need a license? Is it a "performance"? Who do you pay? Which organization will claim you need to pay them?

I personally would not touch it, unless indemnified by the owner of each track.

That's really helpful, thanks.

that was where I was headed.

Owner permission should indemnify the podcaster though?

I appreciate that you are not a lawyer, my god Sir. You do know the shit you know though, and that's a good starting point by me.

TYFYC. I'm working on mine :)

I'd like to see 'owner permission' to play on podcasts expressly stated, but I feel the presumption of inclusion in a feed, thus equal to a 'podcast' suggests that.

We possibly can update the 'block' tag in the namespace to specifically NOT allow it in a podcast.

A license for a 'cover' through the current licensing agencies does not suffice for play in a podcast in my non legal opinion.
