I thought you always needed the @ character to mention someone but it turns out you only need to paste the npub without the @ symbol. Using the @ symbol will trigger completion and that's what causes a crash.
What keyboard are you using? Gboard is known to have issues and its generally recommended to use floris or unexpected.
