 I plan to get one to play with but I do have some cheap energy that I would like to convert into actual bitcoin.

 An S9 is not very efficient at that. 

I got an S9 since it's cheap enough and I run an electric fireplace in the winter, anyway, so... I get heat and hashrate.

 Get a bigger machine. S9 is good for a heater.
