From what I've heard, trad authors still have to self-promote. 😔 Hopefully, the better publishers will at least help a little, maybe arrange appearances or something.
@a3976b27 @1abd43c1 absolutely. I met two fellow Aussie authors who said their slice of the marketing pie was so tiny that they got of their contracts and published indie so they could control and get more marketing. They made more money that way, but this was via 20booksto50k FB group who know their stuff, and throw money at it to make money.

I follow that group & it frequently leaves me dumbfounded. I suppose "you have to spend money to make money," as they say, but the idea is frankly over-whelming to little retired me.
@ce78dee8 @a3976b27 I think it depends what you want as well. I’d be happy if I made enough from writing to not have to work a second job but to do that (barring becoming very lucky and hitting the bestsellers list) I’d have to write different kinds of books, churn out several in a year, that sort of thing, and that doesn’t appeal to me. Also, my current WIP started in lockdown 2020 so three years ago, and I consider that a recent one. Im not a fast writer

The only reason I put out 3 books a year is because I had a backlog before I published my first, plus enough saved to edit them. But 2024 might be the last year I do this. I do have the first for 2025 about three-quarters done, but I might drop to one a year for the final three.
