Should peppers be picked before the first frost?!
There’s an assortment of jalapeño, habanero, Tabasco and bell peppers. Some haven’t reached their final colour however it’s calling for temperatures below freezing tonight. First time gardener here and I’m not sure what to do… #asknostr #gardenstr #needgardenhelp

@WedgeSocial @David @GHOST any tips for me please?
Grab them all, some might turn red if you give them time, otherwise I roast them
As in on a pan at 400ish not like they go bad.
Okay!! Thank you so much. 😊 I appreciate it!
No problem, I am frost covering my flowers tonight. My peppers were picked a week ago I am in zone 7a
@WedgeSocial it’s a tough call to make 😬🫣 Do you still vote to pick them all?

Cover them with a blanket / water them very good, like the leaves, the water can protect them if its on the edge. Also its more a feel you will know more for next year
I’m in zone 4b. I Thank you for the tips. I didn’t want to potentially lose all the peppers so I picked them all and hopefully they will ripen more! 😊
Your pepper plants won't take a freeze. If you have any that you want to over winter do it now. Trim all the limbs back to their Y and trim off all the leaves. Put it in a pot near a window and give it minimal water. It will go dormant but will wake up in the spring. Will give you new peppers really early next season.
Do you have a preferred website that explains this with pictures?
Not that I know of. I posted pictures of my plants here but that was last year. I'll see if I can dig up the pictures. Can't remember if I saved those to my server or not.

Cut off all the leaves.
Follow the limbs back to where they junction into a Y. Trim both limbs above the junction of that forming a Y. Do the entire plant like this.

You will end up with a pitiful spinnly stick. It will do absolutely nothing all winter and you will wonder if it is dead. It will rebud in the spring. Fertilize it when it starts budding new leaves.
 Thank you!
Thank you so much @GHOST!! There’s so much to learn.
 I know, it's fun isn't it? 🤗
I had no idea what I was missing out on until this year!! The whole process is amazing. I even enjoyed weeding. It was relaxing and therapeutic.
I just picked mine - northern Illinois - as it’ll touch freezing while I’m in southern Illinois.

Yes, I know shorter drives to the east or west would garner me more freedom. That is the longer term plan.
Thank you!! This is all so new to me!
