Same here. Started seeing as a marketing stunt to attract listeners. Plus, we were not breaking anything anymore.
I actually am loathe to zap half-hearted introductory notes, as it finally occured to me that someone could just churn those out and collect the money. Npubs show up, say "Hi, I'm new here!", and then we zap so hard that the profile trends. And then the profile sometimes goes dormant.
Seems to happen more with girls' PfPs. Because reasons. Makes me sort of envious, as only my bros zap me, and there's probably some dude in Asia collecting real money with pics of AI-generated mids standing in front of their fake kitchens or hugging their pretend pets. 🙄 You can often tell because they're so perfectly nondescript, unintimidating, and precisely mid. Maths. 🤌

I haven't seen any zapathon notes, lately, but I probably don't follow anyone in that crowd.
I enjoyed the Zapathons - a bit of fun while they lasted and a demo of the tech/wallets/LNURLS etc. Never were going to last though. I regularly prune my following list with a simple criteria: don’t post anything for 6+ months and I’ll likely unfollow you.
I'm down to 3 months. And if you bore me or fail to interact with me, you also get dumped. No more follow spam.

Maybe wine needs another relay lol as well as the welcome one. One which shows new users that have stayed after a week and have engaged in conversation or something lol There's also a lot of new zbd users, who are a different sort of user really. Which I'm not against btw, they're just not really here in the same way the wider nostr people are here.
Yeah, I detached the welcome relay. Pointless. And those of us who post regularly will be seen by everyone, eventually. If they aren't following us, within a few weeks, it's their active decision. And I respect that.
It's a nice idea for a relay, but yeah perhaps pointless. A lot more clients seem to have set up a first post with #introductions template anyway. They should probably all be doing that🤔
Yes, but now we're welcoming bots and sockpuppets. 😂 We have bots with followers and welcomes and zaps, and then other people see them and follow them, too, as they figure they must be real, if they have so many good followers. And that's how we end up with spammers with more followers than normal people.

It's quite good people are at least checking out nostr, not that surprised about the retention thing (all the reasons everyone already knows). There will hopefully be a time in the future where these people will check back in to see if it's progressed.
I think #siamstr might be nostr's biggest success as a genuine, active community (outside of BT expats lol;)). It's probably a totally different experience joining and having that to jump into. Would love to know how that happened. Useful for people trying to replicate maybe? Would also be cool to see more regional/local interest groups popping up (there is perhaps a growing Chinese presence via the FreeFrom app, but not sure). #grownostr #marketing
