 It’s real in these streets
@QW @ltngstore https://i.nostr.build/gd97.jpg
 Where is this ?
 Tanzania
 WTF
Why are people buying so much sugar?
I buy like .5kg every couple months 😅
There is a shortage nationwide in Tanzania
 Okay, thanks for the information
Wow, for real. Also, just looked up the current shillings per sat conversion rate 🤯 https://image.nostr.build/fe1bf4e44854dfcc27a0499cdbae27571dd7211f89eb8aeae856950bf3ec3f22.jpg
Yup! Hectic. The gap is getting bigger and bigger
What's a typical hourly wage there in shillings?
350,000 Tsh per month on average is about right from this case study

https://take-profit.org/en/statistics/wages/tanzania/#:~:text=Latest%20data%20on%20Wages%20(TZS%2FMonth)&text=The%20maximum%20rate%20of%20average,by%20National%20Bureau%20of%20Statistics.
Assuming someone worked 40 hour a week, that 350K Tsh equates to a 79¢ hourly wage in USD, which is currently 1175 sats. It's a mind blowing level of context when you think that someone can make an inspirational or funny post on NOStr and realistically get zapped the equivalent of an hour's wage, or if it's viral enough even an entire day's wages, in Tanzania. https://image.nostr.build/a1459c412d6bcd210a57793adae28d353b1b0c2c7ac1f83d444ae86f0b80127b.jpg
Wow wtf "sats are worth more than shillings round here"
Still wrapping your head around it lol
lol just giving it some clear context for myself and others. I've traveled in the past and seen how far my dollars can go in some places, but it's easy to forget or to not realize the drastic differences that exist from one place to the next.
This is one of the benefits of nostr + zaps. It gives access to a hard currency to the whole planet, it's disruptive.
💯 And one of the reasons Bitcoin's permissionless-ness is so important 💜

Let the purple pilling commence, or continue 😁💜
 😂😂😂😂😂
We only know few but still we keep explore the #Nostr knowledge to other Tanzania 🇹🇿 people we have some who are already on #Nostr keep learn like @59e6d495 nostr:npub1w52ppukfvmh5whjak42y7j5djhlld2hlwrexrtp7hcwup45nw87qhxy2whnostr:npub1w52ppukfvmh5whjak42y7j5djhlld2hlwrexrtp7hcwup45nw87qhxy2wh @jacobgijjah nostr:npub1tpaayu54a0n2dq0wnsyg3ruawkxskrq6qhgwm5pqsesxkrp3t6xsvpj5kpnostr:npub1tpaayu54a0n2dq0wnsyg3ruawkxskrq6qhgwm5pqsesxkrp3t6xsvpj5kp and more are coming , I’m still educating and mentor them step by step .
 #zaps ⚡️are so impressive
 💯💜
Thanks for the zap ⚡️ 🚀🚀🙏🏻🙏🏻
 A humble perspective
Bitcoin is going to bring the world on the same level. Imagine what we will accomplish.
Exactly. Anyone who says V4V doesn’t work doesn’t have the competitive advantage when we are this early.

Fact is… it’s changing lives at its current “so early” form…. ✊🏻
The sad truth is the current infrastructure to hold bitcoin alienates the society that need it the most in Tanzania, and that is heartbreaking.

This is a real case study. I meet a security guard who saw me walk to the car and ask me for money for lunch.

We got to talking and he told me
He is employed.
Works 6 days a week.
7am - 5pm
Has a wife who works and helps a clean and look after a household
He has 2 kids In govt school so no fees.
He gets paid 120k Tsh a month….
Has to pay electricity he said cost him 10k Tsh a month and water bill 5k Tsh a month.

His phone can’t support playstore or AppStore… so can get him his own lightning wallet at the list. Hardware wallet, no computer. Internet is a luxury.

What now… that’s what I am wrestling with and where I want to shine light to.
I know about Bitcoin enough to buy it pretty much daily.

The only option I can think of is a trusted community bitcoin bank. At the basic level I have an excel with there details and sats they have accumulated and set up a wallet that holds them in and go from there.

Waiting for the infrastructure is negligence on my part as far as I am concerned. I can do something and can start from there.
Keep talking about it. This is a forum of problem solvers.

The more we know the more we can put our hearts and minds together.

#Plebchain 💪
 You are right
A problem shared is halved
A joy shared is doubled
Agreed, I have faith this is the place to solve these problems and #plebchain can help do this
I know this is sub-optimal but in that case maybe some web based custodial (lightning) wallet, or even an exchange account might be a temp solution.
you can create them some paper wallets. they will need someone's devide to spend but not to receive and hold the coins.
https://bitcoinbeachbr.org/
these guys did it in brazil
Ok will check it out thanks
Sure. Get in touch with them and they will be happy to assit you do the same there.
 Appreciate 🙏🏾
I would need to go searching but I thought there was some solution that was developed especially for the African continent. I feel like it was featured or talked about by the HRF.

I’ll go do some research.
@8333.mobi but it was blocked in Tanzania
 You run your own node?
 No i don’t.
What would be the benefits of doing so in this context?
It always looked to costly for me to do so
As you mentioned somewhere in this thread having a community Bitcoin bank, a node would be a great starting point for this; you can be the source for your community.

What is the main issue running a node for you? Hardware too expensive? Internet is not stable?
 Yea,
I tried to set one up with voltage.
The fees per month, I didn’t really understand what I was doing. So I closed it.
I was a real novice. But I’d be interested in doing it again if it could benefit the community bank.

What would you advise? Using voltage seemed more work in my opinion.
Very much so, just need cover the ~50,000 shillings/month to use it

I'd be glad to help you we have another Tanzanian we're helping too
Thank you. I’d prefer hardware to a cloud subscription. I’ll look into that
 Best move!
What about a browser wallet like mutiny or alby, no App Store needed just a website. They can write down the seed phrase and receive anytime. Then when they can connect to the internet they can spend for local currency, or better yet other people who will accept for goods.
I think this is the best option.
@powa can invest in a community laptop on site. Make it like an internet cafe vibe and then help them create a mutiny wallet/ Alby wallet. We can introduce nfc/bolt cards to be mobile with it as they don’t have internet access beyond the campus…. However they have control on their own wallets….
@studentofbitcoin when you come through we can talk about this challenge from this thread
 I think using @OpenSecret at @powa is the way…

POWA has internet access and can fundraise for a cheap laptop to use for this purpose and we start from there…

Zapped 13 sats to test https://v.nostr.build/2LDX.mp4
I haven’t messed around with it yet but perhaps a fedimint. Multiple people with knowledge can control the mint to prevent a single point of failure. Money can be sent to their account even if they cannot access it. Then when someone wants or gains access to the technology they can take control of their own funds. Like I said I only know what I have heard on podcasts but it might be an option.
Maybe waiting on @Fedi to get back to me
Persons some sort of custodial lightning solution utilizing nfc cards (like bolt cards)?
 *Perhaps ... not person
Coinos.io and/or eventually ecash through some mint service provider
Maybe gold would better serve people without the needed infrastructure. Or something like offline.cash. But of course those things haven't reached them for a reason. Maybe these people are out of luck until bitcoin's incentivization of energy production reaches them.

@joenakamoto
Right now it’s not available in Tanzania.
We can get there and i hope we can find a solution in the interim

Right now a using @powa as the hub/ internet cafe and assisting in creating an Alby or mutiny wallet is the best option to serve those with no internet access.
The community here are familiar with community banks. Getting loans, micro financing.

Creating one with bitcoin is what I am proposing.

Creating an accountable reliable custodial service is the quest to serve this group.
How do they normally interact with the banks? Cash? Or digitally?
Mobile money. You don’t need internet to access a wallet. @8333.mobi has created a lightning wallet that uses sms menu. However Tanzania blocked it.

Or cash.

Solution I don’t want to do but can only see as viable to get them off zero. Hold their bitcoin for them, use an excel to keep record of amounts. Because also I would be selling bitcoin too.

Or

Use @powa as the internet cafe and invest in some laptops. Teach them
To set up a web lighting wallet.

I think the later as they keep custody of the bitcoin. But many are familiar with the top option. So improving POWA infrastructure could serve the community in a big way.
💯 I like to refer to bitcoin as an API for freedom. There are also other technologies that allow us to access different aspects of freedom.
It's humbling to see the wages that others in the world live on 🫂💜🧡
Nostr's goal is to let more people own Bitcoin, even if it is 1sats.
I drank this often when I lived in that area. Brown sugar tea.
 @Marks you were in Tanzania??
Even better idea: don’t buy any sugar.
What you gonna do when food restrictions come next to you?
