Yes. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were fire-bombed like hundreds of other Japanese and German cities, but they were reported as these special new super bombs in the uncontested wartime press to a credulous public, probably to stop Soviet advancement on the Japanese (they had just declared war, and splitting up Europe was annoying enough, can you imagine a partitioned Japan?)
