Dunno man, I'm not highly technical and there were no issues for me to get going even back in the end of '22 / beginning of '23 time frame. Some highly technical people struggle to tie their shoes.
Relays in Amethyst were simple during that time.
Aren't there default recommended relays now? I thought his issue would be finding people to follow to populate the feed.
When we had the flap from 10k DU to 20k DU (mostly from Twitter) recently, I saw many of those newbs being confused when it came to Amethyst and relays. Some borked their experience by following recommendations from dev. I've been around Nostr for over a year and a half, and have networking experience (not a ton, but enough to get paid), and I find the current Amethyst implementation of relay UI to be a shitshow. Mind you, I'm also a former SQAE, and hold software to some standards. Making things worse for the user is always a backward move.
Sounds like you're in a position to help improve things. As an amethyst user, my experience has gotten better over time so it's hard to relate to what you're describing. Relays have sane defaults and easy to understand explanations for each category.

There remain unhappy paths during onboarding for many apps. Amethyst is not special here. Onboarding remains unsolved. cc @Vitor Pamplona @greenart7c3 @Don't ₿elieve the Hype 🦊 amethyst customer may need help. See screenshot in above note.
This guy onboarded long ago.
Could be. I don’t have this person’s npub. A pattern I’ve seen: user joins, leaves nostr for months/year, and returns. “Why cant I follow/post/edit relay list” are not uncommon questions upon return. These may have been the reason for the person to leave. This is why it’s important to talk to these folks to understand what happened, and how might it be fixed.
