Pretty much, follower count is hard to quantify due to all of the information coming from different relays. If it's a metric you really care about then nostr.band will probably be your most accurate count.
Natural followup question: If I post a note via amethyst, with several hundred less followers than primal, will those several hundred followers not see my note? I assume they will, eventually?
It's more dependent on which relays you're connected to, so if you're broadcasting to like two or three of the top 10 relays, then most people will probably end up seeing it. But if you're only broadcasting to some niche relays that not a lot of users are on, then Less people will see it.
If you really want to make sure things are being seen, look up something like a blaster relay, which is a single relay that connects to a lot of different relays. Off the top of my head I forget who is hosting some of the blaster style relays, so apologies there.

Also, one last thing I'll mention is that unlike Mastodon, relays here are not federated, so they don't communicate in between each other unless it's specifically set up that way. So in a way the relays you're connected to do matter for the content that you're seeing. I imagine if Nostr really catches on there will be topic-specific relays like sports or whatever. But for now And it kind of sucks to say this, especially from a decentralization standpoint, but connect to a few smaller relays and then make sure you're connected to some of the larger relays and you generally won't have a problem with people seeing your stuff.

Correct. Depending on the relays your followers are connected to, and the relays you are connected to in each app, it could appear to be different.
As of right now, my relays are default across all clients. Are their certain relays you would recommend I connect with?
i have the same relays in every client and each gets me different follower count, i guess it depends how the client counts it

Default Primal has been way better for my engagement, however my relay setup on another client was probably outdated. Been kind of synergistic to my activity here also
Yeah, follower counts here are mysterious things, I think they need to be enumerated each time you make a query. Don’t trust any one report of them, they vary with the clients you use and relays you connect to, the time of day and of course the alignment of the stars. 😂
