"As an adjective woke was first recorded in African American usage in the late 19th century, meaning awake, not asleep. The contemporary meaning arose in the US during the 1960s, with the idea of being well informed and aware of what was going on in society. In the 21st century woke was popularized by association with the Black Lives Matter movement and by the lyrics of the 2008 song “Master Teacher” by Erykah Badu, in which the words “I stay woke” serve as a refrain. More recently the word has been used in a more derogatory way, by people who oppose progressive reforms or feel that their advocates are unrealistic or interfering."
Yeah when you wore that shirt maybe it didn’t carry the connotation it does today - I for one remember when it wasn’t negative.
This description is wanting though - “progressive reform” like dragqueen storytime or having “trans” athletes compete in women’s sports are rightly being opposed because the progressive agenda has lost its fukn mind and now needs to be actively resisted.
There was a time when 'gay' meant happy. Language evolves, and if we just look at the surface of the bubble, we don't give ourselves the gift of a deeper understanding of the context and personal meanings that those words mean to each and every individual. A label is a tag, not a box. They should be understood in context and part of that context is that everyone uses their own set of labels in their own way for their own purpose. Fighting about labels is how we divide ourselves, and we can't afford to do that anymore.
like explaining "crt" to 4th graders. leave it. new topic.
What specifically is meant by the left when they use the word woke? Is it something that is exclusively used as an insult by those that do not identify as woke?
It seems strange/too-convenient to me the word "woke" would become derogitory at a time when both the right and the left are in the process of waking up to the reality of being manipulated into hating oneanother.
