This is the point I'm trying to make. People are largely ignoring what's happened to Roger because of differences relating to their stance on Bitcoin and its direction. But fundamentally I think most people share the same sentiment with regards to freedom, anti-war, uncensorable transactions, etc. You can hate him, but to offer no support because you have a disagreement on one aspect of his position even though you may have more in common than not, I feel is somewhat short-sighted. To me it is no different than outright dismissal of each-others positions between Monero and Bitcoin maximalists, for example. I think that fundamentally, both sides have more in common than not. I'm not trying to shame anyone for this, but where everyone is so polarized, I think finding common ground on principles is quite important.
Would you offer support to the Mongols who 5 years ago sacked your city, decimated it, and have now lost a battle somewhere else and are looking poorly? No, you wouldn’t. Roger cut off his own access to support by fucking everyone who might have supported him. It’s not some M5M campaign which turned sentiment against him - it’s his own actions. He is reaping what he sowed. You end up on a fork, don’t expect the other side of the fork to come back for you - you decided to walk that path, you decided to put everyone through that shit, you go walk it alone and understand you had strength in numbers and now you’ve got nothing because you tried to put yourself first. Bitcoiners haven’t forgotten Ross Ulbricht who was never even a vocal Bitcoiner. They’re not some fairweather fans or fickle bunch. Roger deserves his lack of attention and respect. He turned people against himself.
It could be Fake Wright for all I care, I would still offer some support IF he was being mistreated by a state regardless of how much of a piece of shit he is. Your position amounts to, "That guy damaged Bitcoin, fuck him, let them kill him for all I care."
The only reason you or I are in a position to offer help to *anyone* is because of Bitcoin, not Roger. Bitcoin is where it is IN SPITE OF Roger. Not because of him, literally in spite of him. He wanted it to be different and could have fucked us all. So yeah, I don’t care what happens to Roger. He’s the one who burned the boats, not me. Forgive me for not wanting to expend my resources to rebuild those boats. His getting fucked by the State does not please me, but it does seem like karma.
