Bank security practices are so byzantine and broken it's absurd. I spent 45 minutes helping my mom unlock her Chase account today (which was locked because she sent $500 via zelle to a friend who is in the hospital!) Here's how it went:

- Locked for no reason
- Number on website goes to automated answering machine
- It asks for her debit card number (what?) to identify the account
- This is lost and also needs to be replaced. There is no alternative method, 0 doesn't get us to a person
- I call Chase customer service, different number, very similar system, but I am able to get a person on the phone
- They verify her identity by making me hand the phone to my mom and ask her to state her name (what). They also ask for her ssn and a security phrase she doesn't know, although she does manage to share the security phrase for her other bank.
- They re-order the debit card and transfer us to another department, where we do the whole verification charade again
- They send a 2fa code via sms. We receive it, but the site shows an error and won't let us put the code in.
- They then send a different code, and ask me to give it to them over the phone, which the text message explicitly says not to do.
- Despite my better judgment I gave them the number. They then do something on the backend, and I enter a *new* code they gave me over the phone into the web portal to get it unblocked.

It's no wonder old people get scammed! Force someone to deal with this BS for 20 years and anyone would get confused and give the wrong code to the wrong person.
If anyone tells me this I would tell them to stop immediately, as they are being 100% scammed.

WTF!?
Yeah, I definitely second guessed myself multiple times during and after. But I am 100% sure I called the right number
 This is crazy!
 @hodlbod

companies are committing a lot of elder abuse by making information hard to get

bank procedures are very clunky and ineffecient
I wonder if you could bring a class action lawsuit for elder abuse
look into 3rd party mortgage services charging double escrow
 Yiiiikes sounds terrible
it's fraud but after consult apparently I can sue now & go thru hell or pay off the mortgage & file in small claims court(+$10.000.00 now) which seems the better option. class action is ripe for the taking/ have not looked into that/my consult is not a trial lawyer
have talked to state tax office & house insurance provider & both were friendly & stated they were dealing with a lot of friction from this bs!
Mom has $500 for fren hospital bills that’s nice take away. :)
 it’s startling isn’t it?
i forget until I’m forced to interact with that world again.
Um... so don't they have 2FA to some part of the account now?

Some of the questions and procedures in modern customer service don't give me a secure feeling.
there using voice verify now but it's still a cue to hold on to the $
Ironically, if it was a scam it probably would have been much cleaner than this. Today the incentive to lie, cheat and steal from people is higher than the incentive to provide a good customer service.
Yes! A point I forgot to make. Scammers will actually pick up the phone, empathize, and do things for you. How could you not trust them?
 This insanity is beyond comprehension.

#siamstr
sounds like a mega facepalm scenario 🤦
this is at a different level.
some will still consider generating a private key "rocket science" over ALL this process...
🤡 🌎 is insane...
Frustrating. Hope you mom isn’t discouraged by this absurdity and her friend in the hospital is well.
the American banking system is so far behind its actually ridiculous. the fact that you guys still need 3rd parties like zelle and cashapp to send money is crazy.
 Bitcoin: scan this qr code.

Done
you're confused, it's bitcoin that has bad UX
The whole time I could hardly contain my self-righteous bitcoiner indignation
It’s unbelievable how bad banks are with the current level of technology we currently have…
The legacy banking system is dead, people just don't know it yet.
They're so cooked it's almost funny if I wasn't so angry about how awful it is.

BTW it's the same BS dealing with ISPs.

WE'RE NOT NEARLY ANGRY ENOUGH.
Next time someone says #Bitcoin is "too difficult for the elderly" remind them of these banking practices:

 Fuck banks.
my first time using zelle my account was instantly frozen. fucking useless i hate that shit
Sometimes I do believe it's broken by design.

The lack of even the slightest of thought on how banks do customer service and handles security must be on purpose, even if I fail what purpose that may be.
It’s so easy to make a little mistake and get owned in fiat world, so sad
