I went to a hydroponics store today. I have been gardening and starting my own plants for years, but still seem to not know what I'm doing. TIL that for starting seeds, you need white light, not red & blue - those are for flowering. Who knew?! Why do the folks in my #gardening groups all seem to use r & b lights? Was also told, contrary to what I've heard before, that you can't just put grow bulbs into ordinary light fixtures, except for T5s, but that those need to be replaced annually. (!!)
If you want good lights for seed starting and vegetative growth, just get some white LED shop lights. We use these:

They work great for starting seeds and growing leafy greens indoors. They produce a reasonable amount of heat, which helps with the seed germination. A whole room full of them gets pretty warm, though.
