Measles, mumps, chicken pox. I had them all — before any of the vaccines were developed. No movies or other public places because of polio. I watched my friend's sister grow up in an iron lung with only her head in the outside world. She never got to play.

I remember how excited we were when the Salk polio vaccine came out. The entire town went to the college gym to get the vaccine.
